No event called the “Suigosai Grand Lake Fireworks Festival” has been confirmed for 2026 at Togo Lakeside Park on Sunday, July 19.
This article instead covers the Matsue Suigosai Lake Fireworks Festival, held annually on Lake Shinji in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. Information as of July 21, 2026; check the official website before travelling.
The Matsue Suigosai Lake Fireworks Festival is one of western Japan's largest displays, using the broad surface of Lake Shinji as its setting. The 2026 festival takes place over Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, with approximately 21,000 fireworks across the two days and accompanying drone shows.
Event overview
Dates: Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, 2026.
Times:
- Drone show: 20:00–20:15 on both days.
- Lake fireworks: 20:15–21:00 on both days.
Venue: The eastern shoreline of Lake Shinji in Matsue, Shimane, with launches from four barges on the lake.
Number of fireworks:
- Saturday, August 1: 10,000.
- Sunday, August 2: 11,000.
- Total: 21,000.
Typical attendance: Approximately 690,000 people across two days; the 2024 event drew 680,000.
Wet weather: Cancelled in severe weather, with no postponement. Strong winds can cause cancellation even in clear weather.
Venue and map
The main viewing area is along Lake Shinji's eastern shore in Matsue. Fireworks are launched from four barges, creating wide displays across the lake. The water, already famous for its sunsets, reflects the fireworks to create an atmospheric scene in which sky and lake seem to merge.
Getting there
Extensive traffic restrictions and heavy crowds affect the area on both event days. Public transport is recommended.
By train:
- Approximately 25–27 minutes on foot from JR Matsue Station.
- Approximately 5 minutes on foot from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station on the Ichibata Railway. Services are relatively infrequent, so check the timetable and avoid missing your planned train.
By car:
- Approximately 12 minutes from Matsue-Tamatsukuri Interchange on the San-in Expressway.
- Extensive traffic restrictions apply around the venue.
- Parking requires an advance-purchase parking ticket. Tickets are not sold on the day, so buy one beforehand if you plan to drive.
- On the second day only, locations such as Konan Junior High School's grounds may open as temporary paid parking.
Check the last train home: Nearby stations become very crowded after the display. Ichibata Railway services are particularly limited, so check the last departure beforehand and allow plenty of time.
Paid seating and tickets
Paid viewing seats are offered for a more comfortable experience. General sales for 2026 were open as of July 21, 2026.
Viewing areas and their characteristics: Paid seating is divided principally among the Kohoku, Shirakata and Konan areas.
- Kohoku area, orange: Closest to the launch barges, this area suits visitors who prioritise the sound and impact of the display. There are western and eastern zones along the northern shore.
- Shirakata area, purple: Closest to Matsue Station, this area offers panoramic views of the whole display. With food stalls nearby, it is suggested for a balance of convenient access and visibility.
- Konan area, green: This area offers a range of seat types and views of the wide-format effects. It is recommended for a frontal view of the fireworks.
Main seat types and indicative prices for 2026: Options include chair seats, stepped seating and VIP seats for pairs.
- Shirakata area chair or stepped seat: ¥6,500 including tax and admission to the Shimane Art Museum's collection exhibition.
- Prefectural Art Museum area stepped seat: ¥10,500 including tax and collection-exhibition admission.
- Prefectural Art Museum area VIP pair seats: ¥67,000 including tax for 2 people, with a bento from an established ryokan, craft beer, soft drinks and collection-exhibition admission.
- Prefectural Art Museum area chair seat: ¥8,000 including tax and collection-exhibition admission.
Ticket conditions:
- A paid viewing ticket is required for elementary-school children and above. Preschool children may sit free on an adult's lap, but a separate seat requires a ticket.
- Ticket resale is prohibited.
- If the display is cancelled before launching starts, paid viewing tickets are refunded in full. Cancellation after the display has begun generally does not qualify for a refund. Check the official website and ticket terms for details.
Alternative viewing spots
The following places suit visitors hoping to avoid the busiest crowds or to appreciate the lake and fireworks from a different perspective.
Around the Shimane Art Museum: Close to the launch area, this location combines the lake's sunset scenery with the fireworks. Broad lawns and gentle slopes are described as providing relatively good views. The area includes paid seating, although some free viewing spaces are also mentioned.
Shirakata Park: Near central Matsue and easy to reach, this park also provides access to food stalls and a lively festival atmosphere. It is convenient to combine with the area around Shinji-ko Ohashi Bridge and to approach from the city centre.
Suetsugu Park: Slightly farther from the main venue, this park is suggested for a calmer viewing atmosphere away from the densest crowds.
Around Shinji-ko Ohashi Bridge: Close to central Matsue, this area is easy to reach. Stopping on the bridge to watch is prohibited, so use nearby lakeside areas with open views instead. It is also a popular photography location for combining the bridge and fireworks.
The lakeshore near Tamatsukuri Onsen: This provides a view from behind the display rather than the impact of the main frontal venue. Crowds may be lighter, making it suitable for visitors staying in the hot-spring area or avoiding central Matsue. Choose a lakeside location with an open outlook.
