Imabari Citizens' Festival "Onmaku" Fireworks

The Imabari Citizens' Festival 'Onmaku' (今治市民のまつり「おんまく」) is a summer festival that has been held in Imabari City (今治市), Ehime Prefecture (愛媛県), since 1998. 'Onmaku' is a local Imabari dialect word meaning 'with all one's might' or 'recklessly,' and the festival's grand finale is the 'Onmaku Fireworks.' The 29th festival in 2026 will be held on August 8th and 9th, with the fireworks display taking place on the second day, August 9th. A distinctive feature is the close proximity of the launch site to the viewing area, allowing spectators to feel the power of the fireworks up close. Launched from the sea's breakwater, dynamic displays such as fan-shaped and diagonal launches are also highlights. The grand finale, '100 consecutive shakudama (1-shaku diameter) fireworks,' closes the festival with an overwhelming barrage of crown chrysanthemums filling the entire sky.

Niihama Noryo Fireworks Festival

The Niihama Noryo Fireworks Festival (にいはま納涼花火大会), a summer tradition in Niihama City (新居浜市), is one of the largest fireworks festivals in Shikoku. Approximately 8,000 large-scale fireworks illuminate the night sky, and beautiful set fireworks are reflected on the surface of the Kokuryo River (国領川). Particularly impressive is the grand Niagara Falls display, spanning 400 meters wide and 40 meters high, captivating many spectators. Commemorative fireworks sponsored by citizens and fireworks synchronized with music are also highly popular.

However, the riverbed between Hirakata Bridge (平形橋) and Shikishima Bridge (敷島橋) is prohibited for passage all day due to the accumulation of gunpowder, making it dangerous.
