Introduction

The Kawaguchiko Lake Festival is a major fireworks event with more than 100 years of history. Against the magnificent backdrop of Mount Fuji, approximately 10,000 fireworks fill the summer sky and illuminate the lake. It is also known as the finale of the fireworks festivals held around the Fuji Five Lakes and attracts large crowds every year. Musical fireworks synchronised with music and reflections on the water give the display its distinctive lakeside character.

Getting there

Both public transport and driving are possible, but public transport is recommended because extensive traffic restrictions apply on the day.

By train or bus

The nearest station is Kawaguchiko Station on the Fujikyuko Line. From the station, the venue is approximately 10–15 minutes on foot. Extra trains are planned on the Fujikyuko Line for the day to help manage the crowds.

By car

From Kawaguchiko Interchange on the Chuo Expressway, take National Route 139 towards Lake Kawaguchi. The drive is approximately 15 minutes, covering around 4 kilometres.

On the day, extensive restrictions apply to lakeside roads and car parks near the venue from 17:00 until around 22:00. The prefectural Funatsuhama and Hirahama car parks may be unavailable, requiring visitors to use temporary car parks around the lake. Some public car parks may close at 16:30, so arriving early is advisable. Roads become congested during the restrictions; allow plenty of time.

Check the last train home

The area around Kawaguchiko Station becomes very crowded after the display. Check the Fujikyuko Line's last train beforehand to avoid missing it. One traveller review on Jorudan reported a smoother return journey from Gekkoji Station, three stops away, instead of joining the congestion around Kawaguchiko Station.

Paid seating and tickets

The Kawaguchiko Lake Festival does not provide paid viewing seats for the general public. Visitors can watch the fireworks free of charge.

However, some accommodation providers may include specially arranged viewing seats in their stay packages. Those seeking a more comfortable experience can check the offers of hotels in the surrounding area.

Quieter viewing spots

The main venue becomes very crowded, but several places a little farther away offer alternative views of the fireworks.

  1. Ubuyagasaki This headland lies north of Kawaguchiko Ohashi Bridge, across the lake from the display. It is particularly popular with photographers who want to capture both Mount Fuji and the fireworks reflected on the water. Neither too close nor too far from the launch area, it offers the impact of the display in a relatively calmer setting.

  2. Komagari Observation Plaza This elevated area is a little farther from the main venue and is recommended for visitors who want to avoid the busiest crowds. Parking is described as available, making access by car relatively convenient. Because of its elevation, evenings may feel chilly; bring a light jacket.

  3. Around Kawaguchiko Circular Hall The area around the Circular Hall on the lake's northern shore is described as a particularly good location for combining views of Mount Fuji and the fireworks. Reflections on the water and the mountain's silhouette create an atmospheric scene.

  4. In front of Kozantei Ubuya Also mentioned as a quieter viewing spot for the Mount Fuji–Kawaguchiko Mountain-Opening Fireworks Festival, this area is described as a relatively relaxed option for the Lake Festival as well. It is recommended for visitors seeking nearby fireworks with Mount Fuji behind them, away from the densest crowds.
