A well-loved part of summer in Kochi, the Kochi City Summer Fireworks Festival takes place along the Kagami River and features approximately 4,000 fireworks. Water-level fireworks and elaborate set pieces illuminate the sky and river, attracting many spectators each year.

Information as of July 18, 2026. Schedules, prices, transport and viewing arrangements can change, so check the official website before travelling.

Event overview

Here is an overview of the 73rd Kochi City Summer Fireworks Festival.

Date: Friday, August 14, 2026.

Time: Not yet announced; usually around 20:00–21:30.

Venue: Along the Kagami River, around Midori-no-Hiroba.

Number of fireworks: Not yet announced; usually approximately 4,000.

Attendance: Not yet announced; usual attendance is approximately 150,000 people.

Wet weather: Goes ahead in light rain; postponed in severe weather. The reserve date has not yet been announced.

Venue and map

The venue lies along the Kagami River, which flows through central Kochi, particularly around Midori-no-Hiroba. Because the river is relatively narrow, the launch area is close to the spectators, making for a powerful viewing experience. Nearby parks and open spaces provide places to spread a picnic sheet and watch at a relaxed pace.

Getting there

Tosaden Kotsu trams or buses are the nearest public transport options.

  • By tram
    • From JR Kochi Station, take a tram towards Harimayabashi, change there, and get off at Kagamigawabashi or Asahimachi-itchome. The stated walk from either stop to the venue is approximately 10–15 minutes.
    • Traffic restrictions apply around the venue on the day, and some tram sections may be suspended or rerouted. Check Tosaden Kotsu's official website for the latest service information.
  • By bus
    • From JR Kochi Station, take a bus towards Kagamigawabashi or Asahimachi-itchome and get off at the corresponding stop. From there, the venue is an approximate 5–10-minute walk.
    • Buses may also be affected by traffic restrictions, so allow extra time.

Alternative routes in crowded conditions and the last train home

Nearby tram and bus stops become extremely busy after the display. Boarding a tram may take time, so allow a generous margin or consider walking to a stop farther away. Those returning via JR Kochi Station should check the final JR services in advance to avoid missing their connection.

Paid seating and tickets

As of July 2026, official information about paid seating for the 73rd event had not yet been announced. In previous years, paid viewing areas were set up along the Kagami River for visitors who wanted a more comfortable experience.

The following types of seats were sold at past events:

  • Chair seats: Watch from a designated chair.
  • Picnic-sheet areas: Reserved spaces where visitors can spread a picnic sheet or similar covering.

Indicative past prices are generally around ¥3,000–¥5,000 for a chair seat and ¥5,000–¥10,000 per picnic-sheet area. Once announced, sales dates and purchase methods should be checked on the official website and ticketing services.

Quieter viewing spots

The following locations suit visitors hoping to avoid the largest crowds.

  • Kochi Castle keep The keep offers distant views of the fireworks together with the city's night scenery. It is some distance from the launch area, but the contrast between the historic castle and fireworks is part of the appeal. Entry to the keep is restricted to its opening hours, so check both opening and last-admission times in advance and plan an early visit.
  • Hitsuzan Park On elevated ground southwest of central Kochi, Hitsuzan Park offers a broad view over the city. Although it is a little farther from the venue, it offers an unobstructed overview of the aerial display. Parking is available, but crowds are expected on the day, making public transport preferable.
  • Aeon Mall Kochi rooftop car park The rooftop car park at Aeon Mall Kochi in Hadaminamimachi is also listed as a place for distant views. Shopping-centre facilities provide access to food and toilets, which can be convenient for families. Heavy demand is expected, so arrive early. Follow the facility's rules and avoid inconveniencing other customers.
  • Around Kochi New Port Farther south of the Kagami River's mouth, the area around Kochi New Port is another suggested distant-viewing location. It is considerably farther from the venue, but it offers an open view over the sea and relatively fewer crowds. Driving is convenient, although parking space is limited.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Can the display be cancelled? A. It goes ahead in light rain, but severe weather may cause postponement or cancellation. Announcements about postponement dates and cancellation decisions appear on the event's official website or the Kochi City Tourism Association website. Always check the latest information before travelling.

Q. Is parking available near the venue? A. Extensive traffic restrictions apply on the day, and very little parking is available near the venue. Public transport is strongly recommended. Those who must drive should consider parking away from the city centre and transferring to public transport.

Q. Will there be food stalls? A. Many stalls usually open around the venue, serving Kochi's casual local specialities alongside familiar festival foods. They add to the atmosphere, but the area becomes very crowded. Bringing drinks in advance can make the visit more comfortable.
