Miyazaki is where Japan's founding myths are set: the cave where the sun goddess hid, the gorge cut by the river of the gods, the shrine in a sea cliff where the first emperor's father was born. It is also the sunniest prefecture on the main islands, with palms along the coast road and a small castle town so well preserved it is called the Little Kyoto of Kyushu. For kimono, it gives you vermilion against blue sea instead of vermilion against grey stone, and it gives you a night ritual, the kagura dance, that is older than the kimono itself.
The Nichinan coast: Aoshima and Udo
Aoshima (青島) is a tiny island of subtropical trees joined to the beach by a bridge and ringed by the Devil's Washboard (鬼の洗濯板), rows of wave-cut rock that look like a giant washboard at low tide. Aoshima Shrine in the middle of the island is vermilion under palms and screw pines, and the path to it is flat sand and paving. Couples come for the matchmaking blessing, and a kimono couple on the bridge with the rocks below is the Miyazaki photograph.
Udo Shrine (鵜戸神宮), half an hour down the coast, is built inside a cave in a sea cliff, reached by a vermilion bridge and steps carved down the rock face. The tradition is to throw small clay balls, undama, into a rope ring on a rock below; men with the left hand, women with the right. The steps down are the one difficult part in a kimono; take them slowly and hold the rail, and the cave, the waves and the red railings are worth every step.
Obi: the Little Kyoto of Kyushu
Obi (飫肥), inland from the coast, was the castle town of the Ito clan for 280 years. The castle gate, the stone walls, the samurai residences with their gardens and the merchant street survive together, and the town is flat and small enough to walk in an hour. Local restaurants serve Obi-ten, a fried fish cake, and the whole town is a national preservation district. It is the kimono street of Miyazaki, and it is empty on weekdays.
Takachiho: gorge and kagura
Takachiho Gorge (高千穂峡) is a narrow chasm of columnar basalt with the Manai Falls dropping into it; rowing boats go under the falls and the walking path along the rim is paved and gentle. Amano Iwato Shrine (天岩戸神社) faces the cave where, in the myth, the sun goddess Amaterasu hid and plunged the world into darkness; the walk beside the river to Amano Yasukawara, where the gods met to lure her out, is lined with thousands of stone cairns left by visitors.
Every night at Takachiho Shrine (高千穂神社), a one-hour selection of the yokagura (夜神楽) dance is performed for visitors; the full version, thirty-three dances through the night, is held in village homes from November to February. The masked dance of Amaterasu's return is the one you will remember. Sit on the tatami in a kimono and you will feel that you belong to the scene.

Miyazaki Jingu, in the city, is a shrine to the first emperor Jimmu in a forest of ancient trees, with a wisteria that flowers in April. It is the easy kimono photograph if you have only a morning.
Seasons
- Spring: warm early; cherry blossom at Obi and the shrine in late March, wisteria at Miyazaki Jingu in April.
- Summer: hot, bright, and the beaches are open. Yukata in the evening, and the Takachiho gorge boats are busy.
- Autumn: the best season; typhoon risk fades by mid-October and the coast is clear and warm. The full night kagura begins in November.
- Winter: the mildest on the main islands; sunny days on the coast and cold nights in Takachiho, where the kagura season runs all winter.
Plan your kimono day in Miyazaki
- Base in Miyazaki city. The airport is 10 minutes by train from the station and the Nichinan Line runs south along the coast.
- Morning: Aoshima. Train, 25 minutes. Low tide if you can; the washboard is the photograph.
- Midday: Udo Shrine. Bus or taxi down the coast, about 45 minutes from Aoshima. Steps, cave, undama.
- Afternoon: Obi. Train or car inland, an hour in the town, Obi-ten for a late lunch, and back to the city by evening.
- Day two: Takachiho. It is three hours by car from the city, so most people go via Kumamoto or Nobeoka and stay the night. Gorge in the morning, Amano Iwato in the afternoon, kagura at 20:00.
- Day three: Kumamoto or Oita by car over the mountains, or back to Miyazaki for the flight.

FAQ
Are the Udo Shrine steps possible in a kimono? Yes, slowly. There is a handrail all the way and the steps are broad. Wet weather makes them slippery, so pick a dry day and wear zori with a rubber sole if you have them.
When is the washboard at Aoshima visible? Around low tide; it is under water at high tide. Check the tide table for Aoshima and arrive within two hours of the low.
Can I attend the night kagura in a kimono? Yes. The nightly performance at Takachiho Shrine is in a hall with tatami seating; arrive by 19:30 for a good place. Sit with your legs folded to the side to protect the kimono's line.
How far is Takachiho from Miyazaki city? About three hours by car, or a bus via Nobeoka. It is closer to Kumamoto (about two hours by bus) and is often done from there.
Is Obi worth the detour? For a kimono photograph in a preserved castle town with no crowd, yes. The Nichinan Line runs there from Aoshima in about 45 minutes, and the town is a 15-minute walk from the station.
