Toyama: the prefecture that dances in kimono
Every year from 1 to 3 September the hill town of Yatsuo, south of Toyama city, gives the country its most elegant festival. Owara Kaze no Bon: dancers in matching kimono and deep straw hats move slowly through lantern-lit lanes to a plaintive fiddle, all night, no drums, no shouting. If you want to see what a kimono is for, not as costume but as movement, this is the place.
The rest of Toyama is mountain, coast and craft: a snow corridor 20 metres high in spring, thatched villages in a gorge, a Zen temple that is a national treasure, and a copper-casting town with lattice-fronted houses. Here is where a kimono fits and where it does not.
The spots
Etchu-Yatsuo (越中八尾) and Owara Kaze no Bon
The old town sits on a ridge with stone-walled streets stepping down the hill. The festival runs three nights, with dances in each neighbourhood and a stage in the town centre; the ridge streets are stone and slope steeply, so go in comfortable shoes and change to zori in the flat centre. Outside the festival, the town is quiet and the Owara museum plays the music year-round. Hotels sell out a year ahead for the festival; day trips by train from Toyama (25 minutes) are the norm.
Gokayama: Ainokura (相倉) and Suganuma (菅沼)
Two World Heritage villages of steep-roofed gassho farmhouses, smaller and quieter than Shirakawa-go across the border. Ainokura has about 20 houses along one lane, with a lookout on the hill above. The lane is paved; the lookout is a dirt path, shoes only. Snow from December to March, rice paddies in June, gold in late October.
Zuiryu-ji (瑞龍寺), Takaoka
The Maeda family temple, a national treasure of 1663, with a long white-walled corridor around a gravel courtyard and a Buddha hall of grey tile and dark wood. It is the most photogenic Zen temple in the region and almost never crowded. A ten-minute walk from Shin-Takaoka or Takaoka Station.
Kanaya-machi (金屋町) and Yamachosuji (山町筋), Takaoka
Kanaya-machi is the casting quarter, a street of latticed wooden houses with copper inlaid into the paving. Yamachosuji has earthen-walled merchant houses. Both are flat, quiet and a short bus ride from the temple. Takaoka's copper and tin craft shops let you cast your own sake cup.
Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and Amaharashi Coast
The snow wall at Murodo, open from mid April to late June, is a bus-and-cable-car trip to 2,450 metres; it is cold and the corridor is packed snow, so it is strictly a shoes-and-coat outing with a kimono photo only if you are prepared to be cold for two minutes. Amaharashi Coast near Takaoka gives you the Tateyama range rising over the sea from the beach, best on clear winter mornings.

Seasons and what to wear
Toyama is wet: snow in winter, rain in June, and a warm, humid summer. Spring is the snow wall and the Tonami tulip fair in late April. Late October is the best kimono light, with Gokayama's roofs against red hillsides. Early September in Yatsuo is warm by day and cool by night; the dancers' kimono are lined, and spectators wear yukata with a haori after midnight.
Where OlaChill fits in

- Kimono day in Tokyo or Kyoto, own clothes in Toyama. Komongi ¥5,500 (¥4,950 online) at either shop. Kyoto guests heading to Kanazawa and Toyama get the Kiyomizu lanes the day before.
- Next-day return, ¥1,100, to keep the kimono for an evening in Tokyo or Kyoto and return before 10:00 before the shinkansen.
- Chauffeured car for a long dressed day around Kanto or Kansai, quoted per trip.

Plan your kimono day
- Base in Takaoka for craft and temple, or in Toyama city for Yatsuo and the mountains.
- Morning at Zuiryu-ji while the corridor is empty; 30 minutes is enough.
- Kanaya-machi and Yamachosuji on foot or by bus; cast a sake cup at a workshop.
- Afternoon to Ainokura by bus; lane in zori, lookout in shoes.
- Festival nights in Yatsuo: arrive by 17:00, eat early, and follow the dancers through the lanes until the last train.
- Return by 17:00 to any local shop; Owara nights need your own yukata or next-day arrangements with the shop.
FAQ
Can I wear a kimono to Owara Kaze no Bon? Yes. Spectators wear yukata or kimono, and the town looks better for it. The lanes are steep stone, so bring flat shoes for the climbs.
Is the Ainokura lane walkable in zori? Yes, it is paved and gentle. The lookout above is a dirt path and needs shoes.
Can I ride the Hokuriku Shinkansen in a kimono? You can, but over two hours seated creases the hem. A yukata travels better.
