About 15 minutes' drive from Hakuba village, Lake Aoki (青木湖) is the deepest of the three Nishina lakes and is fed by underground springs — the water is so clear you can watch the bottom slide past like a natural aquarium. It's the region's water playground.
What to do on the lake
- Clear kayaks — transparent hulls that turn every stroke into a glass-bottom-boat moment. Wildly photogenic.
- SUP — flat, waveless water means most beginners stand confidently within 15 minutes. Oversized family SUPs carry two adults plus a small child.
- Canadian canoes — wooden 2–3 seaters, perfect for couples and families; paddle under blossoms in spring or through fiery maples in autumn.
- Lakeside outdoor sauna — heat up, then dive straight into the lake, Nordic style.
Prices & conditions
Hourly rentals run roughly ¥3,600–7,200/person depending on the craft; life jackets are free and non-swimmers are welcome. Season: late April to early November. Bad weather means a time change or a full refund.
Beginner tips
- Early morning sessions have the calmest, most mirror-like water.
- Bring sun protection — the surface doubles the UV.
- A waterproof phone pouch (any konbini sells them) saves regrets.
- Combine your day: rafting in the morning, lake paddling in the afternoon — the two bases are ~20 minutes apart.
