Say Hakuba (Nagano Prefecture) and most travellers picture powder snow. Japanese outdoor lovers, though, treasure Hakuba most in green season — late April to early November — when the melting snow turns the valley beneath the Northern Alps into one of Japan's biggest natural playgrounds.
What is there to do?
- Whitewater rafting on two very different rivers: the gentle, swimmable Sai River, and the punchier Himekawa that runs right through the village.
- Lake Aoki — a spring-fed lake so clear it mirrors the peaks: canoes, transparent kayaks, SUP boards, even a lakeside outdoor sauna.
- Tethered hot-air balloon flights rising ~30 m for a sunrise panorama of the Alps.
- Nights on the lake: from mid-July to early August the boat lights go out mid-lake and thousands of fireflies flicker along the shore.
- Autumn foliage canoeing among maples, and winter snowshoe treks through silent forests.

Getting there from Tokyo
The Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Nagano Station in ~80 minutes, then a ~1-hour bus brings you into the valley. Families with luggage often prefer a private chauffeured car door to door — no train changes.
