⚡ Quick answer

Hakuba's two classic rafting rivers have opposite personalities — one calm enough for family swims, one punchy enough for thrill-seekers. Difficulty, prices and schedules compared.

The Hakuba–Nagano area has two rivers that Japanese rafters consider classics: the Sai River (犀川) and the Himekawa (姫川). Both are born in the Northern Alps, yet they deliver completely different rides.

The Sai — for families and first-timers

The Sai is wide and high-volume with a gentle flow (class 1.5–2). Its best trick: calm stretches where you can jump off the raft and swim mid-river — kids adore it. Private boats accept children from age 4.

  • Duration: ~2.5 hours; sessions at 9:30 and 13:30
  • Adults from ¥9,000–11,900 by season; children ~¥2,400 less
  • Private boat for 2–7 people: from ¥42,000
  • Meeting point: Kawanoeki Sazanami, ~50 min from Hakuba village

The Himekawa — for people who want punch

The Himekawa is narrow, steep and quick (class 2–3), crystal-clear with snowmelt and spring water. You can't swim like on the Sai, but the rapids come one after another and it flows right through Hakuba village — meet at Echoland Base at 9:15 or 13:15, ~2.5-hour tour.

  • Adults ¥10,000 · children 6–12 ¥7,600
  • Private boat 2–6 people (from age 5): ¥50,400/boat
  • Note: around Obon (mid-August) horseflies are active — bring a thin long-sleeve layer

Which one?

You are Pick
A family with young kids who want to swim Sai River
A group chasing adrenaline Himekawa
Short on time — no long transfers Himekawa (in the village)
After a riverside BBQ combo Sai + BBQ

Both run late April to late October, rain or shine (except typhoons/high water), with wetsuit, PFD and helmet included.

Check day-by-day availability and send a free booking request (confirmed within 24h, pay on the day) at OlaChill Camp & Outdoor — both rivers have detail pages with hour-by-hour itineraries.
