Everyone knows the Kyoto kimono photograph: Yasaka Pagoda at the bottom of a stone lane, a couple in matching patterns, sixty other people just out of frame. Kyoto prefecture (京都府) is a great deal bigger than that lane. It runs from the tea town of Uji in the south to the fishing village of Ine on the Sea of Japan, and almost none of it sees kimono tourists.
This guide starts where OlaChill's own shop stands, at the foot of Kiyomizu-dera, and then leaves the crowds behind. Start at Kiyomizu: the shop and the first hour
OlaChill Kyoto Kiyomizu is at Kiyomizu 4-chome in Higashiyama, a few minutes' walk below the temple gate, open 9:00 to 18:00. Dressing takes about 30 minutes: pattern choice, the obi, and hair. Fourteen plans cover everything from a ¥4,500 women's yukata and a ¥5,500 everyday Komongi to a ¥12,000 formal Houmongi and a ¥19,000 long-sleeved Furisode; men's plans start at ¥4,000 for yukata, ¥5,000 for a traditional kimono and ¥10,000 for a formal Montsuki. Children's kimono are ¥8,000. Hair styling is ¥1,500, makeup ¥5,000. Booking online is 10% cheaper than the counter price.
Two add-ons matter for this article. Next-day return (¥1,100) lets you keep the kimono until 10:00 the following morning, which is what makes Amanohashidate or a Kurama evening possible. Hotel return (¥1,100) means staff collect the kimono from your Kyoto hotel, so a day that ends in Fushimi or Arashiyama does not have to end with a taxi back to Higashiyama.
Give the first hour to the doorstep, because it is unbeatable: up to the Niomon gate of Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) before 10:00, down through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, and a glance at Yasaka Pagoda. Then take a train out.

A word on Kurama to Kifune. The classic walk over the mountain from Kurama-dera to Kifune takes an hour on a root-crossed forest path. It is not a kimono walk. Do the two separately: Eizan to Kurama for the temple gate and the giant cedar, back to Kibuneguchi and a bus for the Kifune lantern steps.
Uji: the best half day in the prefecture for kimono
Seventeen minutes from Kyoto Station, Uji (宇治) has the Phoenix Hall on the back of the ten-yen coin, the oldest surviving shrine building in Japan at Ujigami, a river with two islands connected by vermilion bridges, and a main street of tea merchants who have been roasting matcha for four centuries. In late April the wisteria at Byodo-in hangs in metre-long clusters. At any season the tea shops will seat you in kimono without a glance.

Seasons across the prefecture
- Late March to early April: Higashiyama is saturated. Go to Uji, Fushimi's canal or the Kamo River instead.
- Late April: Byodo-in wisteria; Kurama's fresh green.
- June to August: Kifune's kawadoko platforms over the river are the coolest place in the prefecture, and yukata is the correct dress. Amanohashidate's beach and Ine's bay are cooler than the city.
- Mid to late November: Ohara and Kifune are five to seven days ahead of the city. Uji's Kosho-ji maple approach is the local secret.
- Winter: Ine under snow, and Kiyomizu-dera's stage with a dusting. Wear the haori and ask for a shawl.
Getting around in kimono
Kyoto Station is the hub for everything in this article except Kurama and Ohara. From the Kiyomizu shop, a taxi to the station is 15 to 20 minutes; the bus is slower and crowded.
For Amanohashidate and Ine, or for a family who wants Ohara, Kurama and Kifune in one day, a chauffeured car saves two hours of transfers; ask for a quote at Japan luxury car with driver.
Plan your kimono day: Kiyomizu to Uji and Fushimi
- Day before: book the plan online. Choose hotel return if your hotel is in Kyoto city.
- 09:00 Kiyomizu: dressing, 30 minutes. Walk up to the Niomon gate before the crowd, then down Sannenzaka.
- 10:30 taxi to Kyoto Station, JR Nara Line rapid to Uji: 17 minutes.
- 11:00 Byodo-in: the Phoenix Hall from across the pond, then the museum. Walk the river to Ujigami Shrine.
- 13:00 tea lunch in Uji: matcha soba and a bowl of koicha.
- 14:30 JR back to Inari (15 minutes): climb past the first crowd to the Yotsutsuji junction for the city view; the trail above it is empty.
- 16:30 Fushimi sake district: Keihan from Fushimi-Inari to Chushojima, the canal, a tasting. Kimono returned by hotel collection, or taxi to Kiyomizu before 18:00.
FAQ
Which OlaChill shop is in Kyoto? OlaChill Kyoto Kiyomizu, in Higashiyama below Kiyomizu-dera. The other shop is in Tokyo Asakusa. There are no OlaChill branches in Gion, Arashiyama or at Kyoto Station.
Can I do Amanohashidate in a rented kimono? Yes with the next-day return add-on. The Hashidate limited express takes about two hours; stay overnight in Miyazu or Ine and return the kimono before 10:00 the day after.
Is Fushimi Inari possible in kimono? The lower gates, yes, but at 7:00 or after 16:00. The full summit loop is two hours of steps; go to Yotsutsuji and turn back.
How do I keep the kimono clean at a kawadoko dinner in Kifune? Ask for the paper apron, sit on the edge of the cushion so the obi bow stays off the floor, and keep the sleeves folded in your lap.
What if it rains? The shop provides a covered umbrella. Uji's tea houses, Byodo-in's museum and the Fushimi breweries are all good rainy-day frames.
