Approximately 16,000 fireworks brilliantly illuminate the night sky over the Hirose River (広瀬川), signaling the start of the Sendai Tanabata Festival (仙台七夕まつり) which begins the following day.

The "57th Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival" (第57回 仙台七夕花火祭) will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. As is customary, it boasts one of the largest scales in the Tohoku region (東北), attracting a large crowd of spectators.
Highlights of the Fireworks Festival
The greatest charm of the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival (仙台七夕花火祭) is undoubtedly its role as the "eve festival" for the Sendai Tanabata Festival (仙台七夕まつり). It truly serves as a prologue, building anticipation for the main festival that begins the following day.
Approximately 16,000 fireworks are launched annually. The starmines, launched one after another to music against the backdrop of the Hirose River (広瀬川) riverbed, and the colorful grand fireworks that fill the night sky are simply breathtaking. A unique feature is that, being held in the city center, you can enjoy the fireworks from various 360-degree angles, including from surrounding buildings and elevated areas. The theme for 2025 was "Wa (輪・和・笑) A Future Connected by 'Wa'," where 'Wa' represents a circle, harmony, and laughter. This year, too, we can expect an elaborate program designed to connect people's hearts and spread smiles through fireworks.
Access & Transportation
The venue for the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival (仙台七夕花火祭) is close to Sendai city center, making it easily accessible by public transportation.
If using trains
- Approximately a 30-minute walk from the West Exit of JR Sendai Station (JR仙台駅).
- Omachi Nishi-koen Station (大町西公園駅) on the Sendai City Subway Tozai Line (仙台市営地下鉄東西線) is the closest station to the venue, just a 3-minute walk.
- Kawauchi Station (川内駅) on the same Tozai Line is about a 10-minute walk.
- Hirose-dori Station (広瀬通駅) on the Subway Namboku Line (地下鉄南北線) is also accessible within a 10-minute walk.
- For those with a Japan Rail Pass, JR Sendai Station is a major hub. For subway travel, consider purchasing an IC card like Suica or Pasmo for convenient tap-and-go access.
If using a car
- You can reach the vicinity of the venue in about 5 minutes from the Tohoku Expressway "Sendai-Miyagi Interchange (IC)" (東北自動車道「仙台宮城IC」).
- However, extensive traffic regulations will be in effect around the venue on the day of the fireworks festival. Typically, there are areas where vehicle entry is prohibited from around 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM, so we strongly recommend using public transportation. As dedicated parking is often not provided, it is wise to avoid coming by car.
