▶ Open on YouTube — like & subscribeThe “74th Sagamiko Lake Boat Festival Fireworks,” a cherished summer tradition in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, is a historic event featuring approximately 4,000 fireworks that light up the night sky and surface of Lake Sagami. Its greatest appeal is the powerful, body-shaking sound created by the mountains surrounding the lake on three sides, combined with the dazzling reflections dancing across the water.
The fireworks began in 1948 as a memorial to those who lost their lives during the construction of Lake Sagami, while also praying for the prevention of water-related accidents and safety on the lake. For more than 70 years, they have continued to illuminate summer nights.

Highlights
Echoing Sound from the Mountains
What sets this event decisively apart from others is its sound. Lake Sagami is surrounded by mountains on three sides, causing the explosive sound of the fireworks to reverberate through the mountains and return. The result is a thunderous roar that seems to shake the ground—an experience that cannot be reproduced at events held along open riverbanks or beaches.
While approximately 4,000 fireworks may seem like a medium-sized display, the impact you feel is far greater than the number suggests—that is why the Sagamiko Lake Boat Festival has remained popular for so long.
15-Sun Shells
The display includes enormous 15-sun shells (approximately 45cm in diameter). Considering that 3- to 5-size shells are the mainstay at many ordinary fireworks festivals, these are exceptionally large. Combined with the surrounding mountain terrain, their impact is truly spectacular.
Aerial Niagara
The new “Aerial Niagara” display is another highlight. Unlike a conventional Niagara display installed on the ground, this production creates a waterfall of light cascading down from the sky.
Reflections on the Lake and Lake Festival Music
Because the fireworks are launched from the lake, they are reflected on the water’s surface. The area around the venue also features performances of the atmospheric “Lake Festival Music,” allowing visitors to enjoy the festival atmosphere even before the fireworks begin. Numerous food stalls will also be open.
Access
By Train
The venue, Kanagawa Prefectural Sagamiko Park, is within walking distance of JR Chuo Main Line’s Sagamiko Station.
Be prepared for crowds on the way home. Sagamiko Station is small for an event attracting approximately 50,000 people, so entry restrictions may be imposed after the fireworks end. Be sure to check the final train times in advance.
By Car
The nearest exits are the Chuo Expressway’s Sagamiko-Higashi Exit and Sagamiko IC.
Traffic restrictions will be in place around the venue on the day, and parking is limited. Traffic jams are expected, so we strongly recommend using public transportation.
Reserved Seating and Tickets
The types of reserved seats, prices, and sales period will be officially announced closer to the event. For details as of July 2026, please check the official website.
Less-Crowded Viewing Spots
The area around Kanagawa Prefectural Sagamiko Park, the main venue, will be the most crowded. The following are potential alternatives for avoiding the busiest areas.
1. Around Sagamiko Ohashi Bridge
The bridge and its surroundings offer a sweeping view across the lake. However, stopping on the bridge may be restricted, so please follow instructions provided at the site.
2. The Far Shore of the Lake
From the opposite shore, you can enjoy a head-on view of the fireworks and their reflections on the lake. Since this area is away from the flow of people at the main venue, it offers a relatively relaxed viewing experience.
3. Elevated Areas and the Mountain Side Around Lake Sagami
This option takes advantage of the terrain surrounded by mountains on three sides, offering a downward view from a slightly higher elevation. Although these locations are farther from the venue, the echoes still carry clearly even from elevated areas, which is one of the defining features of this fireworks display.
4. The Outer Areas of Kanagawa Prefectural Sagamiko Park
Even within the main venue, crowd density decreases in areas farther from the center. This is a good choice for those who want to enjoy the festival atmosphere while avoiding the worst of the crowds.
Note: These are not official viewing locations. Please be considerate of local residents and observe proper etiquette when using these areas.
