The Kagoshima Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks Festival lights up the city's summer sky against the magnificent natural backdrop of Sakurajima, one of the world's notable active volcanoes, and the calm waters of Kinko Bay. It is one of Kyushu's largest fireworks events, attracting crowds with approximately 15,000 fireworks each year.
Event overview
The following arrangements are confirmed for the 2026 Kagoshima Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks Festival.
Date: Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Time: Gates are scheduled to open at 16:30; the opening ceremony runs from 19:20 to 19:30; fireworks are scheduled for 19:30–20:30.
Venue: Kagoshima Port Honko district.
Number of fireworks: Approximately 15,000.
Typical attendance: Approximately 150,000 people, based on the 2025 event.
Wet weather: Goes ahead in light rain. In severe weather, the decision is made by 12:00 on the day. No postponement date has been set.
The decision is announced on the official website and official X account, formerly Twitter.
Venue and map
The venue is the Honko district of Kagoshima Port. With Sakurajima directly across the water, it offers a striking setting for watching the fireworks at close range.
Getting there
Extensive traffic restrictions apply around the venue on the day, so public transport is strongly recommended.
- From JR Kagoshima Station
- Approximately 15 minutes on foot.
- From JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station
- A paid shuttle bus to the venue is planned.
- Regular trains are also scheduled to have additional carriages, and extra services will operate.
- When travelling by tram, get off at Izuro-dori and walk approximately 5 minutes.
- Other nearby transport stops and landmarks
- Approximately 3 minutes on foot from the Minami-futo bus stop.
- Approximately 5 minutes on foot from Kagoshima Honko High-Speed Ferry Terminal.
- Approximately 5 minutes on foot from Dolphin Port.
- Approximately 15 minutes on foot from Shiyakusho-mae in Kagoshima Prefecture.
- Approximately 14 minutes on foot from Asahi-dori.
Crowd management, alternative routes and the last train home
The surrounding area becomes very crowded, and reaching JR Kagoshima Station after the display may take considerable time. For JR Kagoshima-Chuo Station, make use of the shuttle buses and extra train capacity. Check the last train in advance and leave yourself plenty of time. Driving directly to the venue is not recommended because there is no dedicated parking nearby. A more practical approach is to park farther away around Kagoshima-Chuo Station or Tenmonkan, then continue by public transport or on foot.
Paid seating and tickets
Sales of paid viewing tickets for the 2026 event begin at 10:00 on Monday, June 15, 2026. These seats offer a close, comfortable view and tend to sell out early each year.
- Seat types and indicative prices
- Chair seats, including North Wharf, C1 and C2: These are assigned seats with folding chairs, in areas closest to the fireworks. They suit visitors who want to sit comfortably. The stated spacing is 25 centimetres side to side and 60 centimetres front to back. Preschool children may watch free on an adult's lap; a separate seat requires a ticket. For the 2026 event, prices are expected to rise by ¥500 per person because of labour and other cost increases, starting at ¥1,500.
- A and B box areas: Each area measures 1.8 × 1.8 metres and accommodates four people. Bringing chairs is prohibited, and visitors must provide their own picnic sheet or similar covering. Preschool children do not count towards the four-person capacity.
- Boat-based viewing seats: Watch from a moored boat rather than sailing offshore. Prices, including tax, are ¥5,300 for adults of junior-high-school age and above, and ¥2,700 for children of elementary-school age and below. Infants are free but must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations are taken by telephone.
How to buy tickets
Tickets can be purchased through CN Playguide online, by telephone, or using the multifunction copier at FamilyMart stores.
The paid Waterfront Park area, where visitors reported obstructed views in 2025, has been discontinued for 2026. August 29 also coincides with a spring tide, so seats in areas at risk of flooding are not being sold. With wider spacing between seats as well, paid capacity is expected to fall by approximately 3,000 to around 17,000 people. Because fewer seats will be available than usual, checking the information and purchasing early is recommended.
Quieter viewing spots
The following suggestions offer alternatives to the crowded main venue. Choose according to whether you prioritise the impact of the display, the wider scenery or avoiding crowds.
Shiroyama Observatory This well-known elevated viewpoint overlooks Kagoshima, Kinko Bay and Sakurajima. Rather than looking straight up at the fireworks, you see them within a broad landscape characteristic of Kagoshima. It suits visitors seeking a romantic night view or a less crowded setting. Tagayama Park Within walking distance of JR Kagoshima Station, this hillside park is better for those who value open views and fewer crowds over being close to the launch site. It offers views of the fireworks with Sakurajima and Kinko Bay in the background. Less tourist-oriented than Shiroyama Observatory, it can suit couples or adults seeking a quieter evening. Around Io World Kagoshima Aquarium Relatively close to the venue, this is an alternative for visitors who want to feel near the action without using paid seating. The surrounding boardwalk, including Shiokaze-dori, also allows visitors to enjoy the event atmosphere. Its proximity to the venue means some crowding should still be expected. Yojirogahama waterway This location is farther from the main venue, but the fireworks can be seen from here. It is an option for watching from a spacious area away from the busiest crowds. View the Yojirogahama waterway on Google Maps
