The Ito Anjin Festival Fireworks over the Sea fills Ito's summer night with colour and is one of the largest fireworks events on the Izu Peninsula. The 2026 display marks the festival's 80th edition, with approximately 20,000 fireworks—twice the usual number—lighting up the sky and sea along the Ito coast. Simultaneous launches from offshore locations create a spectacular scene, with highlights including large 1-shaku-5-sun shells and an aerial Niagara effect stretching approximately 500 metres across.

Information as of July 17, 2026. Check the official website before travelling. Figures of both five and nine offshore launch locations have been given; check the official announcement for the current number.

Getting there

By train

Ito Station, served by the JR Ito Line and the Izu Kyuko Line, is conveniently located approximately 5 minutes on foot from the main coastal venue. The route runs straight ahead from the station and is relatively easy to follow. JR East and Izu Kyuko may operate extra trains on the day of the display; check each operator's service information in advance.

By car and traffic restrictions

Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from Atsugi Interchange on the Tomei Expressway, travelling via the Odawara–Atsugi Road and National Route 135.

However, extensive traffic restrictions apply around the venue on the day. The National Route 135 bypass closes to vehicles from 19:00 to 21:30. Municipal Nagisa Route 1, between Okawa Bridge and Nagisa Bridge, becomes pedestrian-only from 18:00 to 21:30. Visitors are therefore strongly encouraged to avoid driving and use public transport.

Parking information

There are few permanent car parks around the venue, so public transport is recommended. The following temporary free car parks are planned:

  • Former Nishi Elementary School grounds: 160 spaces, opening at 15:00.
  • Ito Elementary School grounds: 200 spaces, opening at 15:00.
  • New City Hall car park: 100 spaces, opening at 17:30.
  • Ito Shopping Plaza Duo, Fujimi Gate side: 120 spaces.

Together, these temporary car parks provide approximately 580 spaces, but heavy demand is expected and they may fill up. Public transport remains the strongly recommended option.

Check the last train home

The area around Ito Station becomes extremely crowded after the display. Extra trains may run on the JR Ito Line and Izu Kyuko Line, but capacity is limited. Check your return timetable in advance and allow plenty of time. Pay particular attention to the last connections towards Tokyo, which may leave earlier than you expect.

Paid seating and tickets

Paid viewing seats are available for those who prefer a more comfortable way to watch the Ito Anjin Festival Fireworks over the Sea.

  • Type: Special viewing seats with chairs.
  • Location: Nagisa Park car park.
  • Price: ¥3,000 per seat, including a handheld fan.
  • Capacity: Limited to 2,000 seats, all assigned.

Sales for the 2026 paid seating opened on Monday, June 15, 2026. Demand is high and seats may already be sold out; check the Ito Tourist Association's official website for the latest sales status. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Ito Tourist Information Office or by post, enclosing cash by registered cash mail together with the designated application form.

Quieter viewing spots

The main coastal viewing areas become very busy, but moving a little farther away can make the experience more comfortable.

  1. The ends of Ito Orange Beach Orange Beach offers an impressive view, but its central section is particularly crowded. Walk towards either end to look for a less busy area where you can spread a picnic sheet and sit comfortably. You will be slightly farther from the launch locations, but the open view still allows you to enjoy the display.

  2. Nagisa Park Beside Orange Beach, Nagisa Park has open lawns where visitors can relax on a sheet and watch the fireworks. It is also recommended for families with small children. Although paid seating is set up here, the surrounding area also offers good views.

  3. Ito Marine Town The Ito Marine Town roadside station is a little farther from the main venue and offers a relatively less crowded setting. Its spacious grounds provide room to watch the fireworks over the sea. Parking is available, but arriving early on the day of the display is advisable.

  4. Around Kawaguchi Park The area around Kawaguchi Park, approximately 10 minutes on foot from Ito Station, has evening stalls along the Matsukawa River. It is a place to watch while enjoying the festival atmosphere. Crowds gather before the fireworks begin, making it suitable for visitors who prefer a lively setting.

  5. Ideyu Bridge This photogenic spot offers the chance to photograph fireworks reflected in the Matsukawa River with the historic Tokaikan building as a backdrop. The combination of an old hot-spring town and fireworks creates a distinctive scene. It is popular with photographers, so arrive early to secure a good position.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Under what conditions is the fireworks display cancelled? A. The display goes ahead in light rain, but strong winds, an approaching typhoon, rough weather with a high-wave warning, or a risk of lightning may lead to cancellation or postponement until the following day. The decision is announced after 10:00 on the day through the dedicated information line and official website. Always check the latest announcement before setting out.

Q. Will there be food stalls near the venue? A. Yes. Approximately 50 stalls are planned, mainly around Matsukawa Fuji Square. Alongside favourites such as yakisoba, takoyaki and shaved ice, stalls serving local food add to the festival atmosphere. Areas close to the venue become especially crowded, so visiting the stalls earlier is recommended.

Q. Are there other events during the Anjin Festival? A. Yes. On Saturday, August 8, floating lanterns illuminate the Matsukawa River during the Matsukawa Toro Nagashi. On Sunday, August 9, taiko teams from Ito and beyond perform in the Taiko Gassen at Nagisa Park. Fireworks are also planned for the finales of these events, giving visitors three days of summer celebrations in Ito.
