Highlights of the Fireworks Festival

The biggest highlight of the Hakodate Port Festival Fireworks is undoubtedly the "sea fireworks" (海上花火), which make the most of Hakodate Port's unique location. Fireworks launched from Midori no Shima (緑の島) not only color Hakodate's night sky but also reflect their beautiful light on the water's surface, creating a fantastical world.

Particularly noteworthy is the program featuring a variety of displays set to music, including wide starmines, shakudama (large-caliber fireworks), set fireworks, and underwater fireworks. In the past, there have been collaborations between fireworks and songs by GLAY, a popular rock band from Hakodate, which greatly energized the venue.

Furthermore, this fireworks festival is the opening event of the five-day Hakodate Port Festival, making it a truly special night symbolizing summer in Hakodate. With a relatively long launch time of approximately one hour, you can thoroughly enjoy the beauty of the fireworks.

And, when talking about this fireworks festival, the collaboration with the night view from Mount Hakodate (函館山) is indispensable. The spectacle of fireworks alongside one of the world's top three night views is truly a must-see, continuing to captivate many people.

Venue and Map

The fireworks will be launched from “Midorino Shima,” an island floating in Hakodate Port. Spectators can enjoy the display from a wide area of Hakodate Port, stretching from Wakamatsu Pier to Toyokawa Pier and the area around the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. Around Toyokawa Pier, which is close to the launch site, you can experience the power and sound of the fireworks more intensely. From farther away, you can watch and photograph the fireworks together with views of Mount Hakodate and the port’s nighttime scenery.

Please note that Midorino Shima will be closed to the public from July 30, 2026, because it will serve as the launch site.

Getting There

The venue is about a 15-minute walk from JR Hakodate Station and about a 10-minute walk from Hakodate City Tram’s Jujigai stop, making it easily accessible by public transportation.

Extensive traffic restrictions will be in place around the venue on the day of the fireworks. In particular, Tomoe Ohashi and the Bay Area will be closed to vehicles, while part of the roadway on the Toyokawacho side of Tomoe Ohashi will be opened as a fireworks viewing area. The plaza in front of the Mashumaru, the spiral staircase connecting to Tomoe Ohashi on the Mandai-cho side, and the promenade will be closed, so please take note.

Traffic congestion is expected on surrounding roads, and roadside parking is prohibited because it can obstruct emergency vehicles and public transportation. Public transportation is recommended. Stations, tram stops, and bus stops will be extremely crowded after the fireworks, so allow plenty of time for your journey.

Paid Seating and Tickets

Paid seating will be available for the “Hakodate Port Festival–Sponsored 71st Doshin Fireworks Display.”

In 2026, individual sponsorships are being accepted, and viewing seats will be provided at Wakamatsu Pier as a token of appreciation. S seats are available with an 8,000円 sponsorship, while A seats require a 6,000円 sponsorship. These sponsorship seats can be reserved at the Hokkaido Shimbun Hakodate Branch reception desk on the first floor, Seicomart, and the Doshin Play Guide online store.

In addition, invitation seats will be provided as a hometown tax donation gift from Hakodate City at the quay in front of the Hakodate Fisheries Ice Manufacturing Cooperative Association at Toyokawa Pier. These invitation seats have chairs and are close to the launch site, allowing visitors to experience the scale and sound of the fireworks, as well as the waterfront performances including underwater fireworks, up close.

For details about paid and sponsorship seating, please check the official Hakodate Port Festival website and the Hokkaido Shimbun Hakodate Branch information.

Lesser-Known Viewing Spots

The Hakodate Port Festival–Sponsored Doshin Fireworks Display is especially appealing because you can enjoy the fireworks alongside Hakodate’s famous nighttime scenery. Here are 3 recommended lesser-known spots for those who want to avoid the crowds and watch at a more leisurely pace.

  • Mount Hakodate Observatory Fireworks viewed from Mount Hakodate create a spectacular panorama in which the display merges with Hakodate’s nighttime scenery, known as one of the world’s 3 greatest night views. Because the city lights and fireworks look particularly striking together, this is also a popular spot with photographers. The ropeway is a convenient way to get there, but it is expected to be extremely crowded on the day of the fireworks.

  • Motomachi Park Located near the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward and slightly away from the city center, Motomachi Park is one of the quieter spots for watching the fireworks. Since it sits halfway up Mount Hakodate, you can enjoy the fireworks and the city lights at the same time.

  • Hakodate Port Suehiro Green Space / Nishi Wharf Plaza Located a little away from the Bay Area, this spot is generally less crowded and offers an open setting for enjoying the fireworks. It is recommended for those who want to relax by the sea and watch the display while feeling the breeze.

Other free viewing areas include sections of Tomoe Ohashi that are closed to vehicles and opened exclusively to pedestrians, as well as Hakodate Port Chuo Pier.
