Panoramic Day Journey Through Noboribetsu, Lake Toya, and Otaru in Hokkaido

Noboribetsu Hell Valley stands as a volcanic crater remnant near Lake Toya in Noboribetsu City, Hokkaido. Created approximately 10,000 years ago, this roughly 450-meter-diameter zone continuously releases white vapors across barren ground. The pungent sulfur odor permeates the area, which earned its ominous name from its hellish appearance. Showa Shinzan and Bear Farm A catastrophic 1943 earthquake triggered Mount Usu's eruption near Lake Toya, forcing the ground upward and creating what would become Shinzan. The volcano remained unstable for two years, recording 17 major eruptions until September 10, 1945. The resulting 398-meter peak was named Showa Shinzan and designated a Special Natural Monument in 1957. The mountain continues growing today, identifiable by white smoke rising from its rust-colored summit. Bear Ranch occupies space adjacent to the Showa-shinzan Ropeway entrance, home to roughly 100 purebred Hokkaido Brown Bears—Hokkaido's largest wild land animals. Visitors feed these creatures, which frequently rise onto hind legs and gesture for food in an endearing manner. Locally made horse oil products attract considerable interest here. Standard admission runs 850 JPY for adults (junior high school age and up) and 500 JPY for children (ages 6 and above), charged per person. Lake Toya This freshwater caldera lake occupies southwestern Hokkaido with a nearly perfect circular shape measuring roughly 10 kilometers across and spanning 70.72 square kilometers. The shoreline stretches 50 kilometers around. Maximum depth reaches 180 meters, averaging 117 meters, containing 8.19 cubic kilometers of water. Positioned 84 meters above sea level, it ranks as Japan's northernmost ice-free lake and sits within Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Otaru Japan's sole European-style museum draws visitors to this historic port city. Walking alongside the picturesque canal reveals Meiji-period red-brick and gray-tile warehouses lining both sides, creating a serene waterfront experience ideal for group exploration.
