The Akagawa Fireworks Festival (赤川花火大会), which illuminates the summer night sky of Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture (山形県鶴岡市), is one of Japan's leading fireworks displays, proudly proclaiming itself as "Japan's Most Moving." Approximately 12,000 fireworks are launched on a grand scale, synchronized with music, against the backdrop of the vast Akagawa Riverbed (赤川河川敷). The Akagawa Fireworks Festival is held on the Akagawa riverbed in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, between Mikawa Bridge and Haguro Bridge. Access
By Train
The nearest station is JR Tsuruoka Station (鶴岡駅) on the JR Uetsu Line, about a 30-minute walk from the venue. Since 2024 there has been no temporary bus from Tsuruoka Station to the venue, so plan to walk. The station is very crowded after the fireworks, so check the time of your last train home in advance.
By Car
Traffic restrictions are in place around the venue on the day. Official parking lots are set up for the festival; from them, allow a 15 to 30 minute walk to the venue. Check the official website for parking details and the traffic-restriction map, and arrive early.
Paid Seating and Tickets
The whole venue is ticketed: there is no free viewing area, and you cannot enter the venue without a ticket. General sales of 2026 viewing seats began on June 15 at 6:00 PM. Seat types range from individual chair seats to box seats for groups, and every person aged 3 and over counts toward a seat's capacity. See the official website for the current seat list and prices.
