Coach or Train for Your Group at the Asian Games? An Honest Comparison

When the train wins

• Your group is small, up to about ten, and everyone can walk comfortably.
• The venue is central: IG Arena beside Nagoya Castle, Vantelin Dome at Nagoya Dome-mae Yada, Paloma Mizuho via Kanayama, Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Chikusa-ku.
• The session is in daylight and ends well before the evening crush.
• Nobody is carrying more than a day bag.
• You are staying near Nagoya Station or Kanayama.

In these cases, save your money for tickets and dinner. Agree a meeting point inside the venue and let people travel at their own pace.

When the coach wins

• Out-of-town venues. Toyota Stadium, Sky Hall Toyota and the shooting range in Toyota City (40 to 60 minutes by road), Okazaki volleyball (50 to 70), Ichinomiya badminton (30 to 40), Kasugai gymnastics, Gamagori sailing and triathlon (60 to 80). Getting 30 people from Nagoya Station to a suburban gymnasium by rail and local connection is possible, but you will spend the morning herding.
• Large groups. Above 20 people, keeping the group together on trains becomes the leader's full-time job. A coach makes that job disappear.
• Late finals and ceremonies. The opening ceremony on 19 September at Paloma Mizuho runs 18:00 to 20:00 with ID checks at entry; the exit crowd heads for Kanayama. A coach at an agreed point away from the station flow is the calm alternative.
• Equipment and mobility. Fan clubs with banners and drums, media crews with cases, and anyone who cannot do a 15-minute station walk twice a day.
• Weather. Late September is 20 to 30 °C, humid, and still in typhoon season. A coach is a dry room that moves.
• Hotels outside the centre. Groups based in Gifu, Toyohashi or anywhere with a train change on the way home.

The hybrid plan most groups use

Very few groups need a coach every hour of every day. The efficient pattern:

1. Train for straightforward daytime trips to central venues. Cheap, fast, no drop-off negotiations.
2. Coach for out-of-town venue days. One vehicle, door to door, lunch stop on the way.
3. Coach for the return after evening finals and ceremonies. An evening-only booking is a shorter block of hours than a full day, so it costs less, and it solves the one part of the day where trains hurt.
4. Coach for rest-day excursions. Inuyama Castle (about 40 minutes), Ise Jingu (about 2 hours), Magome and Tsumago in the Kiso Valley (1.5 to 2 hours), Takayama and Shirakawa-go (2.5 to 3 hours, better as an overnight).

This pattern buys coach hours only where they change the day, and you are not paying for a coach to sit idle while the group is inside an arena for three hours.

A decision checklist

Answer yes or no for each day of your trip:

• Is the venue outside Nagoya city?
• Is the group larger than 20?
• Does the session end after 20:00?
• Is anyone carrying bulky items?
• Does anyone have limited mobility?
• Is heavy rain forecast?
• Is the hotel more than one train change from the venue?

Two or more yes answers: book the coach for that day or that leg. One yes: consider an evening-only coach or a private car. None: take the train and enjoy it.

Right-sizing the vehicle

If the coach wins for a given day, match it to the headcount: a 7-seat Alphard minivan, a 17 to 22-seat minibus, a 26 to 29-seat Coaster, or a 44 to 53-seat full-size coach. Smaller vehicles have more options for stopping near central venues. For up to six or seven people, a private car with driver by the hour is the right comparison, and the tariff is on that page.

Is it realistic to use trains for a group of 30 at the Asian Games?

For a daytime session at a central venue, yes, if you accept that the group will spread out and regroup inside. For out-of-town venues, evening finals, or anyone with mobility limits, a coach is much easier.

Which venues are easiest by train?

Vantelin Dome Nagoya at Nagoya Dome-mae Yada, IG Arena near Nagoya Castle, Paloma Mizuho Stadium via Kanayama, and Aichi Sky Expo next to Centrair on the Meitetsu Airport Line.

Can we book a coach for only part of a day?

Yes. Evening-only returns after finals and single out-of-town venue days are common bookings. Price depends on hours, distance, tolls, parking and driver meals.

What about getting from Centrair to the hotel?

By rail, Centrair to Kanayama is about 30 minutes on the μ-SKY express and to Nagoya Station 30 to 40 minutes. With a large group and luggage, a charter coach is simpler; Centrair is not on our fixed-price transfer list, so it is quoted through the charter form.
