The Kanto region, with its excellent accessibility from the Tokyo metropolitan area, is a treasure trove of famous hot springs surrounded by abundant nature. A hot spring trip to heal daily fatigue and experience Japanese culture will surely become an unforgettable memory. This time, we will introduce five particularly popular hot spring resorts.
Representative Hot Springs of Kanto
Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture is attractive for its lively hot spring town centered around the Yubatake (hot water field). Its highly acidic water quality is said to "cure all illnesses except lovesickness," and you can also enjoy the Yumomi (hot water stirring) show. Hakone Onsen in Kanagawa Prefecture is close to the city center, offering diverse water qualities and spectacular views of Mt. Fuji. It also boasts numerous museums and tourist attractions. Ikaho Onsen, also in Gunma Prefecture, is characterized by its iconic stone steps street, where you can enjoy two types of hot springs: "Kogane-no-yu" (Golden Water) and "Shirogane-no-yu" (Silver Water). Its atmospheric charm is a major draw. Kinugawa Onsen in Tochigi Prefecture is known for its beautiful valley scenery and abundant skin-friendly alkaline simple hot springs. It is ideal for family trips. And Nasu Onsen in Tochigi Prefecture is a highland resort with a history of over 1300 years since its opening, offering diverse water qualities. You can also fully enjoy nature walks.
Hot Spring Culture and Bathing Etiquette
When enjoying Japanese hot springs, it is important to know the basic etiquette. Before entering the bathing area, wash your body thoroughly to clean yourself. Do not put towels into the bathtub, and those with long hair should generally tie it up. Immerse yourself quietly in the hot water and relax your mind and body. At many hot spring ryokan, you can spend your time wearing a yukata and savor kaiseki cuisine featuring local seasonal ingredients. Experience traditional Japanese hospitality and enjoy an extraordinary moment to your heart's content.
Each hot spring resort in Kanto has its own unique charm. Please find your favorite hot spring resort and experience traditional Japanese healing time.
