Among Japan's aerial experiences — Tokyo helicopter tours (¥30,000+), paragliding (¥15,000+) — one option is oddly overlooked by foreign visitors while Japanese families queue for it every weekend dawn: the tethered hot-air balloon (keiryū kikyū) in Hakuba, from just ¥3,000 per person.
How the flight works
The balloon stays anchored by cable and rises vertically to ~30 metres, hovering about 5 minutes — high enough for a 360° sweep of the Hakuba valley and the Northern Alps, and gentle enough that every age flies: babies in arms, 80-year-old grandparents, even dogs (there are dedicated dog-friendly flights!).
When to fly
Balloons only fly in still air, so flights cluster around sunrise (6:00–9:00) — which happens to be the most beautiful hour anyway: first light gilding the snowy peaks, thin mist on the valley floor. Register at the field from 6:00; flights run in order of arrival.

Small tips
- Wind is the boss — weather cancellations are fully refunded, so book the flight early in your trip to keep a backup morning.
- It's colder at 30 m than on the ground at dawn — add a layer.
