The main venue for the Kawakami Gorge Fireworks Festival is downstream from Kanin Bridge in Kawakami, Yamatocho, Saga City. Known as the “Arashiyama of Kyushu,” the area is a scenic destination featuring the beautiful natural landscape formed by the clear waters of the Kase River and the surrounding mountains. Aerial fireworks are launched from Riverside Kawakami, while the handheld tube fireworks are launched along the Kawakami Gorge riverbank on the east side of Yodohime Shrine.
Access
The area around the Kawakami Gorge Fireworks Festival venue becomes extremely crowded on the day of the event, with traffic restrictions in place. Using public transportation is recommended.
By train and bus Take a Showa Bus bound for Furuyu or Kitayama from the JR Saga Station Bus Center. Get off at the Kawakami-bashi bus stop after approximately 30 minutes, then walk about 3 minutes to the venue.
Buses are also expected to be crowded after the fireworks end, so allow plenty of time and check the return bus schedule and the JR last-train time in advance.
By car From Nagasaki Expressway Saga-Yamato IC, take National Route 263 for approximately 1km (about 1 minute by car).
Traffic restrictions will be implemented around the venue from 18:00 until around 22:00, including a ban on entering Sozabashi and a vehicle closure on Kanin Bridge. Please plan accordingly.
Approximately 500 parking spaces, including temporary lots, will be available. The main temporary parking areas include the Yamato Junior High School grounds, the Saga City Yamato Branch Office, and the Hizen Kokucho ruins. However, parking around the venue is limited, so public transportation is recommended. Please also note that Saga-Yamato Onsen Hotel Amandi strictly prohibits parking solely to watch the fireworks. When using the parking lot on the day of the event, a parking fee of 1,000円 may be collected and refunded to facility users, so be sure to check the arrangements in advance.
Paid Seating and Tickets
Paid special viewing seats are scheduled to be available at the 2026 Kawakami Gorge Fireworks Festival. However, as of 2026年7月, official details regarding the types of seats and prices have not yet been announced.
For reference, paid seats were available at the 2025 festival, offering close-up views of the handheld tube fireworks. These seats were set up on a riverbank embankment near the launch site and came in two types: Type A (30,000円 per section) and Type B (10,000円). Type A allowed camera tripods to be set up in advance and was well received as an ideal location for photography.
The latest information on paid seating for 2026 is expected to be updated regularly on the official website of the Saga City Tourism Association and other sources, so be sure to check before your visit.
Lesser-Known Viewing Spots
The Kawakami Gorge Fireworks Festival attracts large crowds every year, so here are several lesser-known spots for those who want to avoid the busiest areas and enjoy the fireworks at a more relaxed pace.
Around Yodohime Shrine This spot is closer to the fireworks launch area than Kanin Bridge, allowing visitors to enjoy powerful fireworks from nearby. Since the handheld tube fireworks are launched along the Kawakami Gorge riverbank on the east side of Yodohime Shrine, it is especially recommended for those who want a close-up view of that performance. A headquarters for the Shoryo Nagashi memorial lantern procession may also be set up here on the day.
Around Michi-no-Eki Yamato “Soyokazekan” Although slightly farther from the venue, this area is known as a good viewing spot with an unobstructed outlook. It is a good option for those who want to enjoy the overall fireworks display while avoiding the largest crowds.
Kase River riverbank around Kawakami Gorge (upstream from Kanin Bridge) The riverbank slightly upstream from the main venue downstream from Kanin Bridge is relatively less crowded and popular with visitors who want to watch the fireworks at a leisurely pace. The reflections of the fireworks on the Kase River are also beautiful, creating a magical scene.
Some crowds are still expected at these lesser-known spots on the day of the event, so arriving early is recommended.
