The fireworks festival held annually around Monjudo Ukimido at Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s three scenic views, will once again light up the summer night sky in 2026 as the “Sea of Kyoto Miyazu BAY Fireworks.” Although the display is brief, the fireworks launched against the beautiful backdrop of the Sea of Japan offer visitors an unforgettable experience and cherished summer memories. The fireworks held on the same day as Amanohashidate Monjudo’s “Desen Festival” are especially effective at enhancing the atmosphere of this traditional celebration.

Venue and Map

The fireworks will be launched from around Monjudo Ukimido inside Amanohashidate Park in Monju, Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture. Surrounded by the beautiful pine-covered sandbar of one of Japan’s three scenic views and the sea, this enchanting location allows the fireworks to vividly illuminate both the night sky and the water’s surface. On July 24 in particular, the “Desen Festival” will be held simultaneously at Chionji Temple, allowing visitors to enjoy the fireworks alongside the illuminated temple and the Manto-e lantern event featuring dragon lanterns.

Access

The Amanohashidate・Monjudo Ukimido area is accessible by both public transportation and car.

By Train

The venue is just an approximately 5-minute walk from Amanohashidate Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway, making it extremely convenient. The station is only a short walk away, providing easy access for tourists.

Alternative routes during crowded periods and last-train precautions: The area around Amanohashidate Station is expected to be extremely crowded on the day of the fireworks festival. Entry restrictions at the station may also be imposed after the fireworks end, so allow plenty of time for your journey. Since the Kyoto Tango Railway’s last trains run relatively early, check the timetable in advance and take care not to miss your train. Visitors coming from farther away are advised to book accommodation in the area.

By Car

The venue is approximately 10 minutes by car from the Miyazu-Amanohashidate IC on the Kyoto-Jukan Expressway.

About parking: There is no dedicated parking near the venue. Temporary parking lots in central Miyazu may require advance reservations and charge a fee. At the “Miyazu Toro Nagashi Fireworks Festival” held on August 16, temporary sightseeing boat services operate from the Fuchu area on the north side of Amanohashidate, and temporary parking lots at Fuchu Park and the Fuchu Elementary School grounds (430 spaces total) are reportedly available free of charge. However, parking information around the venue for the “Sea of Kyoto Miyazu BAY Fireworks” is unavailable, so using public transportation is strongly recommended.

Paid Seating and Tickets

The “Sea of Kyoto Miyazu BAY Fireworks” generally does not offer paid seating.

However, a “fireworks viewing boat” may operate, allowing passengers to watch the display from the sea. In particular, during the July 24 “Amanohashidate Monjudo Desen Festival,” a guided Ryuto Cruise will operate, offering fireworks viewing from aboard the vessel. Reservations for the fireworks viewing boat may be available through Amanohashidate Pier, so check the Amanohashidate Tourism Association website for details.

Lesser-Known Viewing Spots

Here are several lesser-known spots where you can enjoy the fireworks around Amanohashidate・Monjudo Ukimido even more.

  1. Amanohashidate Viewland (Hiryukan) This observation amusement park sits atop Mount Monju on the southern side of Amanohashidate. From here, you can enjoy the spectacular “Hiryukan” view, where Amanohashidate appears like a dragon ascending into the sky. Since you will be looking down toward the launch site, you can take in the fireworks from an elevated, panoramic perspective. The site is accessible by chairlift or monorail.
  2. Amanohashidate Kasamatsu Park (Shoryukan) This observatory is located halfway up Mount Nariai on the northern side of Amanohashidate. You can enjoy the fireworks from an angle different from that at Viewland, and the contrast between the night scenery and fireworks is especially renowned for its beauty.
  3. Amanohashidate Beach The beach in Monju on the southern side of Amanohashidate Park, where the fireworks are launched, is the closest spot for viewing the display. It is recommended for those who want to experience the fireworks up close, but crowds are expected, so arriving early to secure a spot is essential.
  4. Around Chionji Temple The area around Chionji Temple, adjacent to Monjudo Ukimido, is also suitable for watching the fireworks. During the July 24 “Desen Festival” in particular, the illuminated atmosphere of Chionji Temple blends with the fireworks to create an enchanting scene.
