Japanese has a word for something you only see in high mountains in early autumn: sandan kōyō (三段紅葉) — "three-tier foliage". Fresh snow whitens the summits, maples blaze orange-red across the mid-slopes, and the valley below stays green. Hakuba is one of the few places in Japan where all three tiers fit in a single frame — usually around mid-October.

Where to hike

  • Tsugaike Nature Park (1,900 m): ride the gondola up, then walk a gentle 3.5 km boardwalk loop through an alpine marsh — the classic sandan-kōyō viewpoint. Peak colour: Sep 25 – Oct 15.
  • Happo Pond (Happo-ike): gondola plus a 90-minute rocky climb to a mirror pond reflecting Mt. Shirouma. Proper hiking shoes required.
  • Lake Aoki shoreline path: flat, walkable or cyclable — ideal for small kids and grandparents.

Canoeing through the maples

The region's signature autumn experience: Canadian canoeing on Lake Aoki in koyo season. The still water doubles the burning forest like a mirror; you drift along the shore with nothing but the sound of your paddle. The autumn paddling season runs roughly Sep 15 – Nov 15, guides accompany beginners, and life jackets are free.

What to wear and bring

  1. Three layers: base, fleece, windshell — the lake can be 5–8°C at dawn even when noon hits 18°C.
  2. Thin gloves for early-morning paddles.
  3. Ankle-high hiking boots for Happo-ike; sneakers are fine for Tsugaike and the lakeside.
  4. Foliage glows best in low morning light, 7–9 am — book the early session.
