Day 2: the Games

Use the car for the edges of the day and the train for nothing if you prefer. The organisers ask spectators to use public transport, and central venues are near stations, but a driver removes the crowd from the morning and the night.

Where your session is depends on the sport: athletics at Paloma Mizuho Stadium from 23 to 29 September, basketball and judo at IG Arena beside Nagoya Castle, baseball at Vantelin Dome, water polo at the Nippon Gaishi Hall Rainbow Pool, table tennis at Sky Hall Toyota (40 to 60 minutes from Nagoya). Agree the pickup point with the driver before you go in. Private cars cannot wait at the gate, and on ceremony or finals nights the walk to a clear road may be ten to fifteen minutes.

Day 3: north to Takayama

Leave Nagoya by mid-morning. The drive is two and a half to three hours, which is exactly why this is an overnight and not a day trip. Inuyama Castle is about 40 minutes out and makes a natural first stop if the group wants a break early; otherwise push on.

Takayama's old merchant streets are best in the late afternoon when the day-trip buses have gone. Check into a ryokan or hotel, eat locally, and sleep in the cool mountain air, which will feel like a different country after humid Nagoya.

Day 4: Shirakawa-go and the road back

Shirakawa-go's thatched farmhouses are beyond Takayama; go in the morning before the crowds build, walk the village, climb to the viewpoint. Then turn south. Gujo Hachiman, a small castle town built around clear canals, is the ideal lunch and leg-stretch stop on the way back to Nagoya.

Arrive in Nagoya by evening. If your flight home is not for a couple of days, this is a good night for a proper dinner in the city.

Day 5: Ise Jingu

South this time, roughly two hours by road into Mie. Ise Jingu is Japan's most important Shinto shrine complex; see the Outer Shrine, then the Inner Shrine, and eat on the pilgrim street outside. Toba's coast is a short continuation if you want sea air, or return via Kuwana, where Nabana no Sato's autumn illumination usually begins in mid to late October (check dates) and Nagashima Spa Land sits alongside.

Back in Nagoya for a last night, with the car dropping you at the airport the next morning by quote.

Budget logic, explained plainly

Private cars with driver are booked in two-hour minimum blocks; the tariff is on the hourly page and we do not repeat numbers in articles. For a plan like this, the cost drivers are:

1. Hours. Long days (Ise, Takayama) are long blocks. City days can be short.
2. Distance and tolls. Expressway tolls apply on the routes north and south and are built into the quote.
3. Driver overnight. On Day 3 the driver stays in Takayama. Driver accommodation and meals are part of the price of any overnight charter, just as with coach hire.
4. Vehicle. An Alphard for up to seven; a 17 to 22 seat minibus for larger groups, quoted via the charter form.

Ways to keep it sensible: skip the car on Day 2 if you are happy on trains, or make Day 1 a simple airport transfer and nothing more. Ask for the whole five days to be quoted together and for the driver overnight to be shown as a separate line so you can see where the money goes.

Weather, and why the order matters

Late September and early October are warm and humid, 20 to 30 °C, with typhoon season not yet over. Mountains are cooler; pack a layer. If a typhoon threatens, the mountain overnight is the day to move, not the Games session, which is why the Takayama leg sits in the middle with a spare day either side.
