Getting to Kyushu

Fly directly into Fukuoka (FUK):

Fukuoka Airport is uniquely in the city — subway to Hakata Station in 5 minutes. No 60-minute airport transit like Tokyo.

Day 1: Fukuoka Arrival + Ramen Initiation

This itinerary uses a car for Aso + Yufuin, so JR Pass only partially relevant. For the Hakata → Kumamoto Shinkansen leg ($33 one-way), just buy singles.

Driving in Kyushu — Gold for Rental Cars

Kyushu is Japan's best rental-car experience outside Hokkaido:

• Mountain roads not congested
• Volcanic landscapes (Aso, Kirishima) only accessible by road
• Free highway rest stops with food
• Parking at attractions cheap (¥200-500 for half-day)

Q: Kyushu in August worth it? A: Very hot and humid (35°C + 90% humidity). Fukuoka Yamakasa festival (July 1-15) is amazing but bring sweatbands. October is ideal.

Q: Can I do Kyushu without a car? A: Yufuin + Aso will be train-only painful. Fukuoka + Beppu + Nagasaki do-able by train. Car unlocks ~40% more of Kyushu.

Seven days is right for one loop. Rent a car for days 3-6. Eat ramen twice a day.
