Yamagata: the gaslit street everyone has seen
Ginzan Onsen is the reason most people type "Yamagata" into a search bar. A single street of Taisho-era wooden inns along a river, gas lamps, snow on the eaves, steam from the baths. It is small, it is real, and it is one of the few places in Japan where a kimono at night is not for the photo but simply the correct thing to wear to dinner.
The rest of the prefecture is quieter and older: a mountain temple with a thousand steps, a Renaissance-style prefectural hall, a castle park, and a summer festival where thousands dance with flowered hats. Here is how to do it dressed.
The spots
Ginzan Onsen (銀山温泉)
The street is about 300 metres long and car-free. Inns lend yukata and haori to their guests, and at dusk everyone strolls out in them. The gas lamps come on at sunset, and winter snow (December to March) is the postcard. The bridges over the river are wooden and can be slippery when wet; take small steps. Beyond the last inn a path leads to a waterfall, which is a shoes walk.
Yamadera Risshaku-ji (山寺 立石寺)
Founded in 860, the temple climbs a cliff in 1,015 stone steps through cedars to an open hall with a view down the valley. Basho wrote his cicada haiku here. The steps are uneven and there are no rails on much of it; do the climb in shoes and change into zori at the top if you want the shot from Godaido hall. The lower hall, Konpon Chudo, is a flat two-minute walk from the gate and fine in kimono.
Bunshokan (文翔館), Yamagata city
The former prefectural office, a British Renaissance building of 1916 with a clock tower and a marble staircase. Free to enter, quiet, and the interior halls give you the sort of period-drama frame you normally have to pay a studio for.
Kajo Park (霞城公園)
Yamagata Castle's moat and reconstructed gates, a ten-minute walk from the station. About 1,500 cherry trees in mid to late April, lit at night. Flat paths throughout.
Dewa Sanzan: Mount Haguro (羽黒山)
In the west of the prefecture near Tsuruoka, a cedar avenue of 2,446 steps leads to a thatched shrine, with a five-storey pagoda standing alone in the forest near the bottom. The pagoda is a ten-minute walk down from the entrance and is the kimono spot; the full climb is not.

Seasons and festivals
Winter is what Yamagata sells, and it delivers: Ginzan under snow, and Zao's "snow monsters" on the ropeway. A kimono works at Ginzan because you are only ever a minute from a warm inn; layer thermals under it and borrow the inn's straw boots for the street. Late April brings sakura to Kajo Park and cherry orchards to Sagae, and in June the same orchards let you pick fruit. The Hanagasa Matsuri (5 to 7 August) in Yamagata city has more than 10,000 dancers in yukata with flowered hats; it is one of Tohoku's four great summer festivals and a good yukata evening for visitors. Autumn colour hits Yamadera in late October.
Where OlaChill fits in

- Kimono day in Tokyo, ryokan yukata at Ginzan. The inns lend a yukata and haori; that is the outfit the street was built for. Save our Komongi (¥5,500, ¥4,950 online) or Houmongi (¥12,000) for Asakusa.
- Next-day return, ¥1,100, if you want a Tokyo evening in kimono before a morning Tsubasa; return before 10:00.
- Chauffeured car for a long dressed day around Kanto without trains; quoted per trip.

Plan your kimono day
- Sleep at Ginzan, not near it. Day visitors leave by 16:00; the gaslit hour belongs to overnight guests.
- Arrive by 15:00, bathe, change into the inn's yukata and haori, and be on the street as the lamps come on.
- Photograph from the bridges, not the middle of the street, so the inns line up on both sides.
- Next morning at 08:00 the street is empty and the light is blue; do a second round.
- Yamadera on the way back: lower hall in kimono, the climb in shoes.
- Bunshokan in Yamagata city for a final indoor frame before the train.
A few local courtesies
Ginzan's inns lend yukata for the street, but ask before taking their haori beyond the bridges. The street is residential above the shops, so late-night photos should be quiet. At Yamadera, the lower hall asks visitors to remove footwear on the veranda; slip-on zori make this easy. Hanagasa's dancers rehearse for months, so applaud rather than step into the road for a closer frame, and mind the flowered hats swinging at head height.
FAQ
Is the Ginzan Onsen street walkable in zori? Yes in the dry months. In snow, wear the boots your inn provides and switch to zori only for a quick frame on a cleared patch.
Can I climb Yamadera's 1,015 steps in kimono? I would not. The steps are uneven and steep. Wear shoes and comfortable clothes up, and enjoy the kimono at the lower hall and the gate.
Can I take the Tsubasa shinkansen in a kimono? Yes, but nearly three hours seated will loosen and crease it. A yukata travels better.
