Every winter millions come to Hakuba to ski. But there's another way in for those who can't ski or don't want to — and it delivers just as much Japanese winter: snowshoeing, walking through snow-buried forests on tennis-racket feet.
What is it — and is it hard?
Snowshoes strap under your boots and spread your weight so you float on metre-deep powder instead of sinking. There's nothing to learn: if you can walk, you can snowshoe — from elementary-schoolers to 70-year-old grandparents. The effort feels like brisk walking: slower, softer, and far quieter than skiing.
What makes the Hakuba tour special
