The complete packing list for outdoor Japan by season and activity — rafting, lake paddling, hiking, snowshoeing — plus what to buy cheaply after you land.
Good news first: the most expensive specialist gear — wetsuits, PFDs, helmets, boats, snowshoes — is already included in the tour price at Japanese outdoor bases. You only need to cover personal items. Here's the checklist, trimmed by many seasons of guiding.
Year-round basics
- Passport + small cash (mountain bases often don't take cards; ~¥500 facility fees are cash)
- Travel/health insurance card (tours ask you to carry it for emergencies)
- Waterproof phone pouch on a lanyard (¥300–500 at any konbini or Daiso)
- Sunscreen + insect repellent (non-negotiable in summer)
- Personal water bottle, quick-dry towel
For rafting / lake paddling (Apr–Nov)
- Swimwear worn underneath + full dry change for after
- Sports sandals with heel straps or old sneakers that can get wet (flip-flops get refused)
- Glasses strap or goggles if you wear glasses — the river keeps what it takes
- Towel (some bases rent them for ¥200–300)
For autumn hiking
- Ankle-high hiking boots + spare thick socks
- Three layers: wicking base, fleece, windshell — mornings and noon can differ by 10°C
- Small torch, whistle, offline map (valley reception is patchy)
For winter snowshoeing
- Waterproof ankle boots, waterproof gloves, wool hat covering the ears
- Waterproof trousers (snow-soaked jeans are a disaster)
- Stick-on heat pads (kairo — ¥100 for 10 at any Japanese drugstore)
What to buy cheaply in Japan
Workman (workwear chain) sells serious waterproof gear at a third of outdoor-brand prices; Daiso/Seria cover pouches, gloves and socks; Montbell is the homegrown outdoor brand worth splurging on.
