The Tono Summer Fireworks Festival is a beloved summer tradition in Tono City, Iwate Prefecture, adding brilliant color to Tono’s short summer. Approximately 5,000 fireworks are launched from the Hayasegawa riverbank, and the powerful sound created by the distinctive terrain of the Tono Basin is one of the event’s greatest attractions. The festival was canceled in 2025 due to a review of its security arrangements, but it will return in 2026 for the first time in two years, raising high expectations among visitors.
Event Overview
- Time: 19:00~20:30
- Venue: Hayasegawa riverbank (around Ryokuchi Ground) (Kamihayasegawara, Tono City, Iwate Prefecture)
- Number of Fireworks: Approximately 5,000
- Estimated Crowd (typical attendance): Approximately 7,000~17,000 people (based on past attendance)
- Rain Contingency: The event will go ahead in light rain but will be canceled in severe weather. No alternate date has been scheduled in case of bad weather.
Venue and Map
The Tono Summer Fireworks Festival takes place along the riverbank of the Hayasegawa, which flows through Tono City, particularly around Ryokuchi Ground. Thanks to Tono’s basin terrain, the sound of the fireworks reverberates through the surrounding mountains, allowing visitors to fully enjoy their impact not only visually but also acoustically. With few obstructions from the spacious riverbank, you should be able to take in the beautiful fireworks.
Access
By Train
The nearest station is JR Kamaishi Line’s Tono Station. The venue is conveniently located approximately 7~10 minutes on foot from the station. The area around the station and the roads leading to the venue are expected to be crowded with visitors on the day, so allow plenty of extra time for your journey. After the fireworks, be sure to check the time of the last train departing from Tono Station.
By Car
From Tono IC on the Kamaishi Expressway, it is approximately 10 minutes by car (approximately 3 km) toward Kamaishi via National Route 283.
Parking Information: Approximately 500~1000 free parking spaces will be available around the venue, including temporary parking areas. However, some paid parking lots are also available. Traffic restrictions are imposed each year from 16:00 to 22:00, so arriving early is recommended. In 2026, the restricted area is scheduled to be expanded and security measures strengthened.
Paid Seating and Tickets
There are no paid viewing seats at the Tono Summer Fireworks Festival. Visitors can watch the fireworks freely from the spacious Hayasegawa riverbank. Bring a picnic sheet or folding chair and enjoy the show in comfort.
Best Viewing Spots
Few locations are officially designated as “hidden viewing spots,” but based on the terrain around the venue and reviews from previous years, here are several places where you may be able to enjoy the fireworks in a relatively relaxed setting.
- Around the Topia rooftop There are reports that the fireworks can be viewed from above from the rooftop of Topia, a commercial facility near Tono Station. Since it is slightly farther from the venue, it is recommended for those who want to avoid the crowds while taking in a broad view of the display.
- Nabekura Park Located within walking distance of JR Tono Station, Nabekura Park stands on elevated ground at the site of a former castle. Although it is somewhat far from the venue, the park overlooks the Tono Basin, so you may be able to enjoy a distant view of the fireworks being launched.
- The Hayasegawa riverbank slightly upstream or downstream If you want to avoid the crowds at the main venue, consider looking for a spot along the Hayasegawa riverbank a little upstream or downstream from the launch area. The spacious riverbank may offer locations with few obstructions. However, confirm in advance that the area is outside the traffic restrictions and take care to stay safe.
