Held each year during the Obon period in Ishidoriya, Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, the Ishidoriya Yume Festival is a warm-hearted fireworks event expressing local people's dreams for the future. Approximately 5,000 fireworks launched across from Taisho Bridge Park illuminate the midsummer sky and the Kitakami River. Varied effects, including starmines and fireworks set to music, make it popular with both local residents and visitors from farther away.

Getting there

The festival can be reached by public transport or car.

By train

The venue is approximately 15 minutes on foot from Ishidoriya Station on the JR Tohoku Main Line. The route from the station is relatively straightforward, following a single road, but crowds are expected, so allow extra time. The station becomes very busy after the fireworks, and the final train departures are limited. Check the timetable beforehand.

By car

From Hanamaki IC on the Tohoku Expressway, take National Route 4; the drive to the venue takes approximately 15 minutes. Around 1,300–1,500 free temporary parking spaces are provided nearby, but they tend to fill early each year. Arrival by around 17:00 is particularly recommended.

Traffic restrictions Restrictions apply around the venue on the event day. The embankment at Taisho Bridge Park is closed from 17:00 to 21:00, and part of the Ishidoriya Kamiguchi area operates as a one-way route from 18:30 to 21:30.

Paid seating and tickets

The Ishidoriya Yume Festival does not generally provide paid viewing seats. All viewing is free, so arrive early to find a good position. Bring a picnic sheet and enjoy the fireworks at a relaxed pace.

Lesser-known viewing spots

The following alternatives may suit visitors hoping to avoid some of the crowds.

  1. Riverbank upstream of Taisho Bridge This area lies across the river from the main venue, close to the launch site, offering an immersive experience of the fireworks' light and sound. It is a lesser-known viewing area frequented by local people, with a comparatively relaxed atmosphere.

  2. Ishidoriya Fureai Sports Park A little farther from the venue, this park has an appealingly broad grassy area. It is less crowded than the main viewing area and is especially recommended for families with young children. Enjoy the fireworks in a relaxed, picnic-like setting.

  3. Roadside Station Ishidoriya This is a convenient viewing option for visitors arriving by car. The fireworks can be seen in the distance from the car park, and the location can help you avoid congestion after the display. Souvenirs and snacks also make it suitable for combining sightseeing with the evening event.
