A three-day Aichi itinerary with a private driver: one Asian Games session in Nagoya, a full day at Ise Jingu, and a half day at Inuyama Castle and Gifu.
Most visitors to the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 hold tickets for one or two sessions, not the whole fortnight. That leaves days to fill, and Aichi and its neighbours reward anyone who leaves the city. The problem is that the best places, Ise Jingu, Inuyama Castle, the Gifu riverside, are spread out and not always easy by rail with a group.
This three-day plan uses a private car with driver as the connecting thread: one Games day inside Nagoya, one long day south to Ise, and one relaxed half day north to Inuyama and Gifu. Swap the order to match your session date. Times are planning figures and always traffic-dependent.
Day 1: your session day in Nagoya
Use the car sparingly on this day. Central venues are well served by rail, and the organisers ask spectators to use public transport. Where a driver helps is in the gaps: hotel to a morning sight, sight to lunch, then a drop at an agreed point near the venue, and a pickup afterwards so nobody queues for a train in the dark.

Which venue depends on your ticket. Athletics is at Paloma Mizuho Stadium from 23 to 29 September, basketball and judo at IG Arena, baseball at Vantelin Dome Nagoya, tennis at Higashiyama Park Tennis Center from 27 September to 3 October. Day 2: Ise Jingu and the coast
Ise is roughly two hours by road from Nagoya, so this is a full day. Leave early.
Morning. Drive south into Mie Prefecture. The driver takes the expressway; you watch the flat plain give way to hills. Arrive at Ise Jingu's Outer Shrine first, then move on to the Inner Shrine, which is the heart of the complex. Allow two to three hours for both, at a walking pace, because the forest paths and the gravel approach are the point.
Lunch. The pilgrim street outside the Inner Shrine is lined with food stalls and small restaurants. A private car means no rush back to a station.
Afternoon. Continue to Toba on the coast for the bay views, or head into Shima if the group wants a quieter shoreline. Alternatively, turn back towards Nagoya and stop at Kuwana: Nabana no Sato's autumn illumination usually begins in mid to late October, so check the dates, and Nagashima Spa Land is next door if children need a reward.
Evening. Back in Nagoya by dinner, having never once looked at a timetable.
The cost logic here favours the car strongly. Four people, a long day, several stops in places without convenient rail links: the hourly booking covers all of it, and the tariff is on the hourly page.
Day 3: Inuyama and Gifu, a half day that can stretch
Inuyama Castle is about 40 minutes north of Nagoya. It is a national treasure, one of the oldest surviving castle keeps in Japan, and small enough to see in an hour including the climb. The old town below has cafes and craft shops for a slow late breakfast.
From Inuyama, Gifu is a short hop. The cormorant fishing season on the river runs until mid-October, and boats go out in the evening. If your dates fall inside the season, this is the reason to make Day 3 a full day rather than a half: lunch in Gifu, an afternoon around the castle hill, then the fishing boats after dark, and the driver takes you home.
If cormorant fishing is not running or does not appeal, the half day ends at lunchtime and the afternoon is free in Nagoya for the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park at Kinjo-futo, Atsuta Jingu, or shopping in Sakae.
Putting the three days in the right order
The fixed point is your session. Around it:
- Session on the first day: do Ise on day two while you still have energy, Inuyama on day three as a gentle finish.
- Session in the middle: Inuyama on day one to shake off travel, session day two, Ise day three.
- Session on the last day: Ise first, Inuyama second, then the Games as a finale, but be careful about late night finishes and next-day travel.
Vehicle and budget notes
For up to seven people, the Alphard minivan is the standard car; for two or three it is spacious, for six or seven it works with light luggage. Bookings run in two-hour minimum blocks, and long days such as Ise are simply longer blocks. Tolls on the Isewangan and Higashi-Meihan expressways are part of the quote.
Larger groups doing the same three days move to a 17 to 22 seat minibus, quoted through the charter form. We do not quote figures in articles; ask for the tariff with your dates.
Weather and the rain plan
Late September and early October are warm and humid, 20 to 30 °C, and typhoon season is not over. Ise is worth doing in light rain; the forest is arguably better for it. Cormorant fishing is cancelled in bad weather, so keep Day 3 flexible and have the SCMAGLEV park or the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology as an indoor fallback.

How long is Ise from Nagoya by car?
About two hours each way by road, traffic-dependent. It is a full-day trip; do not try to combine it with a Games session on the same day.
Can the driver wait at the venue during the session?
Not at the gate. Private vehicles need pre-arranged drop-off, and the driver will reposition nearby and return to an agreed pickup point after the session.
Is the cormorant fishing guaranteed?
No. The season runs to mid-October and boats do not go out in bad weather. Treat it as a bonus and keep an indoor alternative for the evening.
Do we need the car on the session day at all?
Not necessarily. Central venues are on the rail network. The car is useful for the morning sightseeing and for a late pickup after an evening session, especially on ceremony nights.
Can this plan work for eight or more people?
Yes, in a 17 to 22 seat minibus rather than the Alphard. The route is identical; the quote comes through the charter form.
