Groups in town for the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 tend to see venues, hotels and the inside of trains. A single well-planned day fixes that. Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Jingu, the Osu shopping arcade and Sakae cover the city's history, its great shrine, its street life and its modern centre, and a coach links them without anyone learning the subway map.
The plan below is built so the group finishes in Sakae by late afternoon, close to good food and within easy reach of an evening session. Swap the order if your tickets demand it; the stops are all inside the city, so the coach hops are short.
The route at a glance
| Block | Stop | Time on site | Coach hop to next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | Nagoya Castle and Meijo Park, Hommaru Palace | 2 hours | About 20 to 30 min south |
| Late morning | Atsuta Jingu | 1 hour | About 15 to 20 min north |
| Lunch and early afternoon | Osu shopping arcade | 2 hours | About 10 min |
| Afternoon | Sakae and Oasis 21 | Free time, 1.5 to 2 hours | Coach to venue or hotel |
All hops are traffic-dependent. Nagoya's inner-city roads are not the expressway; twenty minutes can become thirty around lunchtime.
Morning: Nagoya Castle and Meijo Park
Start here at opening time, before the heat builds. The rebuilt Hommaru Palace is the highlight for most visitors, with its painted screens and cypress interiors, and the castle grounds and Meijo Park give a large group room to spread out.
Two Games notes. IG Arena, the venue for basketball and judo, sits beside the castle and Meijo Park, so a group with an IG Arena session that day can do the castle in the morning and walk to the arena. And during athletics week, 23 to 29 September, the race walk runs on a loop course around the Aichi Prefectural Government Office and Nagoya City Hall in the Sannomaru area next to the castle. Roads close for it, so on those mornings ask the driver about the drop-off point before you set off.
Coach drop-off near the castle is arranged by the driver on the day. Expect a short walk to the gate.
Late morning: Atsuta Jingu
Atsuta Jingu in the south of the city is one of Japan's most important shrines and a complete change of atmosphere: tall trees, gravel, quiet. An hour is enough for the walk to the main hall and back.
Group discipline here is simple: one meeting point at the entrance, one time. The grounds are large enough that people wander. Photography rules are posted; follow them.
Lunch and early afternoon: Osu
Osu is where a group eats and spends money. The covered arcade streets around Osu Kannon temple mix cheap eats, second-hand shops, electronics and souvenirs, and it absorbs thirty people without anyone noticing.
Rather than one restaurant for forty, give the group ninety minutes of free time with a fixed return point. Nagoya's local dishes to point people towards:
- Hitsumabushi: grilled eel on rice, eaten in stages. The city's signature dish.
- Miso katsu: pork cutlet with a dark, sweet miso sauce.
- Tebasaki: peppery fried chicken wings.
- Kishimen: flat udon noodles in a light broth.
A group of forty eating hitsumabushi at one sitting needs a reservation. Small groups of four to six wander in easily. Decide which you are before the day.
Afternoon: Sakae and Oasis 21
Sakae is Nagoya's commercial heart, and Oasis 21 is the glass-roofed complex with the rooftop water garden that everyone photographs. Free time here works well: department stores, the TV tower area, cafes for people who need to sit down.
This is also the natural end point. Sakae is central, so from here the coach can run the group to Paloma Mizuho Stadium for an evening athletics session, to Vantelin Dome for baseball, or back to the hotel to change first. Or the group can stay for dinner and take trains back, which is easy from Sakae.
Timing for an evening session
If the group holds evening tickets, work backwards. Nagoya to any of the city venues is a short hop, but venue drop-off is at a point agreed with the driver, not at the gate, and the walk from there plus queues at security eat time. Aim to be dropped 60 to 90 minutes before the session starts. For the opening ceremony on 19 September, with every attendee ID-checked, much earlier.
If a whole city day plus a ceremony is too much for older travellers, cut Atsuta Jingu and give the group a hotel rest after Osu. The coach can collect from the hotel again in the early evening.
Weather
Late September to early October is warm and humid, 20 to 30 degrees, with rain possible at short notice. Every stop here has shade or shelter nearby: the palace at the castle, the trees at Atsuta, the covered arcade at Osu, and the shops and cafes of Sakae. This is one of the better days to hold in reserve as a rain plan for outdoor trips further afield.
Water on the coach, and a policy that the coach is the cool, dry regroup point, keep everyone comfortable.
Vehicle
For a city day with four short hops, size on headcount and nothing else. Minibuses for up to 22, Coasters for up to 29, full-size coaches for larger groups. Central Nagoya streets are wide enough for full-size coaches, but hotel forecourts vary, so give the hotel name when you request a quote and the driver will check the pickup point.

FAQ
Can we walk from Nagoya Castle to IG Arena?
Yes. IG Arena is beside the castle and Meijo Park. A group with a basketball or judo session there can do the castle first and walk over, then meet the coach at an agreed point afterwards.
Is this day possible on the opening ceremony date?
Cut it down. The ceremony at Paloma Mizuho Stadium starts at 18:00, with advance registration and ID checks for everyone, so the group should be heading to the stadium by mid-afternoon at the latest. Do the castle and Osu, skip the rest.
Where do we eat as a group of 40?
Osu with free time and a fixed return point is the easiest. If you want the whole group at one table for hitsumabushi, book ahead; it is not a walk-in proposition for forty people.
Can the coach stay with us all day?
Between stops, yes. At each stop the driver drops the group and parks where legal parking exists, then returns at the agreed time. Kerbside waiting in central Nagoya is not something to count on.
What if it rains all day?
Go anyway. The castle palace, Atsuta's tree cover, the covered Osu arcade and Sakae's malls are all workable in rain. Save the outdoor day trips for better weather and use this one as your fallback.
