Seki has been forging blades for centuries and today makes kitchen knives, scissors and razors sold worldwide. The town has a knife museum and several maker showrooms where you can see blades being finished and buy directly. Check opening days directly before you go, because some workshops keep irregular hours.

Practical points for buyers:

• Knives go in the car, not in your day bag, and later in checked luggage, never in cabin baggage.
• Ask about tax-free purchase with your passport where the shop offers it.
• If you want a specific maker, tell us in advance so the driver has the address; Seki's shops are not all in one street.

Gujo Hachiman: the water town

Gujo Hachiman is known for the water that runs through it: canals along the lanes, springs used by residents for washing vegetables, and a river clear enough to see the bottom. It is a place to walk slowly. The old town centre is compact enough to cover in an hour, then repeat the streets you liked.

The castle on the hill above the town is a rebuild rather than an original, but the view down over the roofs and rivers is worth the climb if the group has the legs. Your driver can take you to the road below the castle to save the steepest part.

Lunch

Eat in Gujo Hachiman rather than Seki, so lunch falls in the middle of the day rather than at eleven. Local soba, river fish and simple set meals are the norm; it is not a place for elaborate dining. Tell the driver if anyone has dietary limits, and we can suggest a restaurant to pre-book so the group is not wandering with a rumbling stomach.

Getting back for the evening

Leave Gujo Hachiman by about 15:30. The run back is roughly 1.5 hours on a normal day, and the last stretch into Nagoya carries commuter traffic from late afternoon. If you have an evening session, say so when booking and we will bring the whole day forward by an hour rather than trust the road. Without a session, a 17:30 hotel return leaves time to shower and head to Sakae for dinner.

Weather note: this is a valley day in typhoon season. Late September and early October are usually warm and humid, 20 to 30 °C, but if heavy rain is forecast for the mountains the canals lose their charm and the roads slow. We would suggest swapping the day for a city plan and moving Gujo to a clearer date.
