Highlights
Evening Parade — August 2-6 Around 20 giant Nebuta floats, approximately 5m (16 ft) tall and 9m (30 ft) wide, parade through the city. These magnificent floats feature warrior figures and mythical creatures crafted from washi (和紙 - Japanese paper) and wax, illuminated from within, depicting themes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Sengoku (Warring States) period warlords, and Japanese mythology. Hundreds to thousands of dancers called "Haneto" (ハネト) accompany each float, parading to the lively music of taiko (太鼓) drums, fue (笛 - flutes), and shō (鉦 - cymbals), known as ohayashi (お囃子).
Daytime Parade — August 7 This is a chance to appreciate the intricate details and craftsmanship of the Nebuta floats up close in daylight, a different experience from the evening parades. It's popular among families and photography enthusiasts.
Marine Parade & Aomori Fireworks Festival — August 7 Evening Award-winning Nebuta floats are loaded onto boats at Aomori Port (青森港) and parade through the bay, beautifully lit up. The Aomori Fireworks Festival (青森花火大会), featuring approximately 11,000 fireworks, is held simultaneously, creating a spectacular collaboration of Nebuta and fireworks to conclude the festival.
How to Participate as a Haneto
One of the Aomori Nebuta Festival's greatest appeals is that you can not only watch but also participate!
Participation Requirements
- Must wear the official Haneto costume (正装 - seiso).
- You can freely join any Nebuta group (no prior registration required).
Getting Your Haneto Costume
- Available for purchase at department stores and supermarkets in Aomori City (e.g., NAKASAN, Sakurano, Ito-Yokado) for approximately ¥8,000–¥15,000 (about $55–$100 USD).
- Rental options are also available at costume rental shops around Aomori Station for approximately ¥3,000–¥5,000 (about $20–$35 USD).
Please note that you cannot join the parade without the official costume.

Access
By Train The venue is a 5-10 minute walk from JR Aomori Station (JR青森駅).
- From Tokyo: Take the Tohoku Shinkansen "Hayabusa" (東北新幹線「はやぶさ」) to Shin-Aomori Station (新青森駅) (approx. 3 hours), then transfer to a local line for Aomori Station (5 minutes).
- From Sendai: Take the Tohoku Shinkansen (東北新幹線) for approx. 2 hours.
- From Hakodate: Take the Hokkaido Shinkansen (北海道新幹線) + local line for approx. 2 hours. The Japan Rail Pass is valid on Shinkansen and JR local lines. For local travel, IC cards like Suica or Pasmo are convenient.
By Air From Aomori Airport (青森空港): A shuttle bus takes approx. 40 minutes to the city center. Direct flights are available from Haneda, Itami, Sapporo, and Nagoya.
By Car Use the Tohoku Expressway (東北自動車道) Aomori IC (青森IC) or Aomori-Chuo IC (青森中央IC). Please note that extensive traffic restrictions will be in place in the city center on festival days, and parking will be limited.
Accommodation and Pre/Post-Festival Stays
Accommodation in Aomori City (青森市) typically books up 6 months to a year in advance. Alternative options include:
- Hirosaki City (弘前市) (40 minutes by train; the Hirosaki Neputa Festival (弘前ねぷたまつり) also runs from August 1-7).
- Hachinohe City (八戸市) (1 hour 20 minutes by train; the Hachinohe Sansha Taisai (八戸三社大祭) is held from late July to early August).
- Hakodate City (函館市) (2-4 hours by Seikan Ferry (青函フェリー) or Hokkaido Shinkansen (北海道新幹線)).
