Why the Golden Route
The Golden Route (ゴールデンルート) is Japan's most-traveled path: Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka, 500 km of Shinkansen-connected cities covering modern Japan (Tokyo), traditional Japan (Kyoto), and food-fun Japan (Osaka).
It's over-recommended but that's because it works. 80% of first-time Japan visitors take some version of this route for good reason — all three cities are English-friendly, connected by bullet train, and give you genuine variety in one week.
This itinerary is the clean 7-day version. If you only have 5 days, see our 5-day first-timer. If you have 10, see the deep-dive version.
Budget per person: $2,100-3,500 on the ground. Flights separate ($900-1,500). Best for: First-timers, couples, solo travelers, small groups 2-4 people. Not ideal for families with kids under 6.

JR Pass Decision
Your train spend: Tokyo→Kyoto + Kyoto↔Osaka + Osaka→Tokyo = ~¥30,000 ($200)
7-day JR Pass = $333. Pass loses by $133. Skip the pass, buy single tickets.
Exception: If you add Hiroshima side-trip (day 5 or 6), the pass wins. See our JR Pass math breakdown for all scenarios.
What to Skip If Tired of Temples
Americans often hit "temple fatigue" day 5 (Kyoto has 1,600 Buddhist temples). Swap-ins:
- Samurai Kembu Theater (Kyoto) — 45-min samurai show + you try sword drills
- Shimabara Fushimi sake brewery tour — Kyoto's alcohol-producing district
- Nintendo Museum (Uji, outside Kyoto) — opened 2024
- teamLab Forests Fukuoka or Osaka Castle Park picnic
- Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan — world-class, 2-3 hours
Add-Ons
If you can stretch to 8 days: Add one day in Kyoto (still a lot to see).
9 days: Add Hakone overnight before Kyoto (onsen + Fuji views).
10 days: Add Kanazawa or Hiroshima. See our 10-day deep-dive itinerary.
11-14 days: See our 14-day full Americans itinerary.
FAQ
Q: Why Osaka only 1 night? A: For a 7-day first trip, Osaka is a day-trip from Kyoto (15 min Shinkansen). An overnight forces you to repack + change hotels. Cut if you need to.
Q: Can I skip Osaka entirely? A: Yes. 7-day = Tokyo 4 + Kyoto 3 works. Day trip to Osaka for dinner if you want the street food.
Q: Is this good for introverts? A: Tokyo overwhelms introverts. Try our Kyoto culture-focused itinerary instead.
Q: Best month? A: April (sakura) and October-November (koyo) are peak. June rainy season, July-August hot/humid, December-January cold but clear. Avoid Golden Week (last April-first May) — prices + crowds.
Q: Travel insurance needed? A: Yes. Medicare doesn't cover overseas. See Travel Insurance for Americans.
Bottom Line
The Golden Route is classic for a reason. Tokyo (modern variety), Kyoto (traditional soul), Osaka (food energy) in 7 days gives first-timers a complete Japan experience.
Don't try to add Hiroshima or Hokkaido in 7 days. Save them for the second trip — there WILL be a second trip.
