JR East Boosts Shinkansen Frequency for Golden Week 2026

Extra Shinkansen Capacity Through May 6

JR East has scheduled additional Tohoku Shinkansen services running between Tokyo and Sendai/Morioka through May 6, 2026, to absorb Golden Week travel surge. Saturday and Sunday departures expand by 12-18 services per day on the Hayabusa and Yamabiko lines.

Reserved seats sell out same-day on peak hours (06:00-09:00 northbound, 16:00-19:00 southbound). The JR East Tohoku Area Pass remains the cheapest way to ride if you have 5 days in the region — book your specific seat on JR East Train Reservation site rather than relying on non-reserved cars during the holiday.
