Signature Programs
Waterborne Star Mines A Lake Suwa specialty. Star mines spread out in a fan shape from a special stage on the lake. Combined with their reflections on the water, the visual effect makes the fireworks appear almost twice as large.
Kiss of Fire (Kiss of Fire) An ultra-wide Niagara waterfall stretching approximately 2km. The spectacular cascade of light falling like a waterfall from a bridge spanning Lake Suwa is one of the festival finale’s highlights.
How It Differs from the National New Fireworks Competition Lake Suwa also hosts the “National New Fireworks Competition” in early September, separate from the lakeside fireworks festival on August 15. This is a competition in which pyrotechnicians compete in originality and creativity, featuring approximately 10,000 fireworks. It has separate tickets and a separate schedule from the lakeside fireworks festival, so be careful not to confuse the two events.

Sales typically begin in early June, and tickets sell out quickly due to high demand. Check the official website of the Lake Suwa Festival Executive Committee.
Free Viewing Areas Some areas around Lakeside Park, the Shimosuwa Town side across the lake, and elevated spots such as Enrei Pass offer free viewing. However, you will need to arrive early during the day to claim a spot.
Getting There
By Train It is an 8-minute walk from JR Kamisuwa Station. The journey takes approximately 2 hours 20 minutes from Tokyo on the Limited Express Azusa, approximately 2 hours 20 minutes from Nagoya on the Limited Express Shinano, and approximately 1 hour from Nagano Station on local trains. Special trains also operate on the day of the festival.
By Car Large-scale traffic restrictions and severe congestion begin on surrounding roads at around 12:00 on the day of the event. It can also take 2〜3 hours just to exit the Chuo Expressway at the Suwa IC or Okaya IC. Traveling by train and staying overnight is strongly recommended.
Accommodation
Hotels and ryokan around Lake Suwa (Suwa, Shimosuwa, Chino, and Okaya) can be difficult to book as much as 1 year in advance. Hot-spring inns along the lake (Kamisuwa Onsen and Shimosuwa Onsen) are especially competitive, as some popular properties offer views of the fireworks directly from guest rooms.

Viewing Tips
- The fireworks can be seen from far away because they are launched at high altitude, but a location within 30 minutes of the lakeshore is ideal if you want to enjoy the sound and reflections on the water
- Kamisuwa Station becomes extremely crowded after the event. Limited Express Azusa services toward Tokyo, especially those departing between 21:30〜22:30, fill up quickly. Reserve a seat in advance
- Because the festival takes place during the Obon period, expressways in Nagano Prefecture and toward Tokyo are also congested on the return journey
