Fireflies & Nights on the Lake — Japan's Few-Weeks-a-Year Experience

The Japanese treat fireflies (hotaru) as the emblem of summer's impermanence — they glow for a few weeks, then vanish. At Lake Aoki near Hakuba there's a way to watch them unlike anywhere else: from the middle of the lake, on a boat with every light switched off.

How the firefly cruise works

The boat leaves at dusk (~19:45) and drifts slowly to mid-lake. Once true darkness falls, the captain kills every light. Your eyes take a few minutes to adjust — then along the shoreline, thousands of green sparks begin to blink, doubled by the still black water. No traffic, no streetlights. Just fireflies and stars.

• Season: only about mid-July to early August — a few weeks a year
• ~1 hour · children from age 6 · groups from 4 people
• Humid nights after light rain are the brightest — don't rush to cancel in drizzle!
• July and August host two different species (large genji and small heike)

Outside firefly weeks, Lake Aoki runs stargazing night cruises: on clear nights the Milky Way is bright enough to reflect off the surface. At ~750 m altitude with little light pollution, Hakuba is one of the most accessible dark-sky spots from Tokyo.
