Yakushima, a World Natural Heritage site located in the south of Japan. Deep within its mystical forests, the Jomon Sugi, a giant cedar tree said to be several thousand years old, stands silently. Trekking to visit this magnificent symbol of nature captivates many people, but it is crucial to approach it with thorough preparation and mindset.
About Required Time
Jomon Sugi trekking is typically a long journey, departing from Arakawa Trailhead in the early morning and taking approximately 10 to 12 hours round trip. Since you will be walking on both a trolley track and a full-fledged mountain trail, physical strength and time management are crucial. The path to Jomon Sugi is over 10km one way, with slippery sections and ascents/descents. Planned action is required to ensure you depart before sunrise and complete your descent before sunset. It is important to proceed at your own comfortable pace.
Essential Equipment
Yakushima's mountain climate is highly changeable; it's even said that "it rains 35 days a month." Therefore, appropriate equipment is essential for a safe trek.
First, choose waterproof trekking shoes that provide good ankle support. Rainwear must be a two-piece (jacket and pants) type made of highly waterproof and breathable material. Don't forget moisture-wicking, quick-drying base layers for layering, and warm clothing. A backpack with a rain cover is recommended.
Additionally, we recommend carrying a headlamp (including spare batteries), a sufficient amount of water and trail food, a first-aid kit, a map and compass (or GPS), a bear bell, and a portable toilet. Please enjoy your encounter with Yakushima's rich nature and the historic Jomon Sugi to the fullest.
