Venue and map
The main venue is Mikuni Sunset Beach. Known for its gently shelving shore, the beach is popular with families and is also a well-known place to watch the sun set over the Sea of Japan. Fireworks are launched offshore, and the signature water fireworks spread in beautiful semicircles close to the surface. Kuzuryu River Boat Park is also used as a viewing area and is described as offering a broad view of the whole display, including the water fireworks.
Getting there
Both public transport and driving are possible, but very heavy crowds are expected on the day.
By train The nearest station is Mikuniminato on the Echizen Railway Mikuni Awara Line. It is approximately 5 minutes on foot from Mikuni Sunset Beach, making it particularly convenient. From Fukui Station, the journey on the Mikuni Awara Line takes approximately 47 minutes.
Extra trains are planned for the event. However, after the fireworks, waiting to board a train from Mikuniminato towards Fukui can take 2–3 hours, so plan the return journey carefully. Leaving at a slightly different time or buying a digital ticket beforehand may help make the journey smoother.
By car Kanazu Interchange and Maruoka Interchange on the Hokuriku Expressway are convenient access points. Allow approximately 20 minutes from Kanazu or 35 minutes from Maruoka to reach the Mikuni area.
Traffic restrictions apply around the venue from 09:00 to 22:00. Roads around Sunset Beach become particularly congested after 16:00, and free car parks often fill up around 17:00, so an early arrival is recommended.
A total of 4,000 parking spaces is provided, including some paid parking. Paid-viewing-ticket holders can use a free shuttle bus from Boat Race Mikuni's car park to Tojinbo's car park. From the latter, it is approximately 20 minutes on foot to the venue. Visitors using free viewing areas may also take the shuttle, but the return fare is ¥1,100 including tax. Road congestion can delay the buses, so allow plenty of time.

Quieter viewing spots
Mikuni is a very popular display and the main venue becomes extremely crowded. The following alternatives suit visitors seeking a calmer setting. Some are farther from the launch area or offer only partial views of the water fireworks, so choose according to your priorities.
Ryushokan, the Sakai City Ryusho Museum This popular hillside location offers an overview of the fireworks. Relatively fewer crowds and a wide view also make it suitable for photography. However, the car park may be unavailable if the museum holds a night opening or another event on the same day. Check the museum's event information in advance.
The embankment around the Tojinbo sightseeing-boat landing A little farther towards Tojinbo, the embankment near the sightseeing-boat landing is another place to watch. Its distance from the main venue can provide a quieter setting, popular with couples and photography enthusiasts.
Oshima Farther from the launch area, Oshima is suggested for visitors hoping to avoid the largest crowds. Free parking and a relatively easier escape from return-journey congestion are described as advantages. Some water fireworks may be difficult to see.
Shiomi Park Located in Mikuni Kitahonmachi, Sakai, Shiomi Park is another suggested viewing location. Its elevated position provides a good outlook and relatively clear views of the display.
Mikuni Sports Park This spacious sports park is approximately 15 minutes inland on foot from the Sunset Beach launch area. Lawns provide space to spread a picnic sheet and watch at a relaxed pace. It is a spot often used by local residents.
Frequently asked questions
Q. What is the biggest highlight of the Mikuni Fireworks Festival? A. Its defining attraction is the water fireworks. Professional pyrotechnicians use a demanding technique to launch them from boats, producing spectacular semicircles over the sea. The water-level 2-shaku fireworks are especially impressive, spreading across the water off Sunset Beach. Musical star mines and large 2-shaku shells that rise to approximately 450 metres and open to around 450 metres in diameter are also major highlights.
Q. What traffic restrictions and parking arrangements apply? A. Traffic restrictions vary by location, with some areas closed to vehicles from 09:00 to 22:00. A total of 4,000 parking spaces is provided, including paid parking. Paid-viewing-ticket holders may take a free shuttle from Boat Race Mikuni's car park to Tojinbo's car park. Visitors watching from free areas may also use the shuttle for a return fare of ¥1,100 including tax. The area becomes very busy, so public transport and arriving with plenty of time are recommended.
Q. How can I avoid the crowds after the fireworks? A. Stations, car parks and shuttle stops become extremely crowded immediately after the display. Waiting for a train from Mikuniminato towards Fukui may take 2–3 hours. Consider enjoying the atmosphere for a while or spending time at a nearby restaurant before starting the journey home. Checking extra-train arrangements and purchasing a digital ticket beforehand may also help. Booking accommodation nearby and visiting Tojinbo or other Sakai attractions the following day is another way to combine sightseeing with avoiding the busiest return period.
