In March 2024, Japan officially launched the "Designated Activities Visa for Digital Nomads" — opening the door for citizens of 49 visa-exempt countries to live and work remotely in Japan for up to 6 months, provided they're employed by a company based outside Japan.

Who Qualifies for Japan's Digital Nomad Visa?

• 💻 Work type: You must be working remotely for a company registered outside Japan.

Documents You'll Need

• Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining

• Proof of income: employment contract or freelance contracts + bank statements from the last 3–6 months

• Private health insurance certificate explicitly covering Japan

• Visa application form (Application for Certificate of Eligibility — COE)

• Passport-size photo (45mm × 35mm)

• Visa fee: ¥6,000 (approx. $40)

How to Apply

• Submit your application at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in your home country.

• Processing time: 5–10 business days.

• The visa is valid for 6 months, non-renewable — at the end of your stay you'll need to leave Japan or switch to a different visa category.
