Gamagori is the Asian Games' seaside city. Sailing takes place at Kaiyoh Yacht Harbor, and the triathlon is held there on 20 and 21 September. It is 60 to 80 minutes from Nagoya by road, traffic-dependent, which is long enough that you should make a day of it. Takeshima, a small shrine island joined to the shore by a footbridge, and the resort complex Laguna Ten Bosch are both in town.
A private car with driver is the practical way to do it: the venues are spread along the coast, public transport between them is limited, and a sea-breeze day with a picnic and shopping bags is better with a boot to put things in.
Getting there
From Nagoya the run is roughly 60 to 80 minutes on a normal day. On competition days, especially the triathlon weekend of 20 and 21 September, spectator traffic on the same roads pushes that towards the upper end and beyond. Leave early; the sea does not mind if you are there before the first race.

Sailing at Kaiyoh Yacht Harbor
Sailing is a spectator sport with a difference: much of the racing happens offshore, and what you see from land depends on the course and the wind. Check the official schedule for race days and any designated viewing areas; do not assume a grandstand. Vehicle access at venues is restricted and no bay can be promised, so the driver drops and collects you at an agreed point nearby.
Bring a hat, sunscreen and water. Late September is warm and humid, 20 to 30 °C, and a harbour wall has no shade.
Triathlon, 20 and 21 September
The triathlon uses roads as well as the water, which means closures around the course on both days. If you are in Gamagori for the triathlon, expect diversions and give the driver extra time to reach the agreed drop-off. Check the official schedule for the start times and the course map, and pick a viewing spot that lets the car reach you afterwards without crossing the course.
Takeshima
Takeshima is a small wooded island just off the Gamagori shore, connected by a long footbridge, with a shrine at its centre and a path around the edge. It takes about an hour to walk across the bridge, circle the island and come back. It is the calm counterpart to the racing, and a good morning stop before the venue or an afternoon wind-down after it.
The driver waits on the mainland side. There is no vehicle access to the island.
Laguna Ten Bosch
Laguna Ten Bosch is a seaside resort complex with an amusement park, a shopping and dining area and, in season, evening illuminations. It suits families and anyone who wants a meal with a view after the sport. Check opening hours and what is running on your date, as attractions vary through the year. It works as the last stop of the day, with the car taking you straight back to Nagoya afterwards.
A full-day sketch
- 08:00: Hotel pickup in Nagoya.
- 09:30: Takeshima. Walk the bridge and the island loop.
- 10:45: Drop near Kaiyoh Yacht Harbor for the sailing session, or the triathlon viewing point on 20 or 21 September.
- 14:00: Collect at the agreed point. Late lunch.
- 15:00: Laguna Ten Bosch.
- 18:00: Depart for Nagoya. Hotel around 19:30, traffic-dependent.
Swap the order if the racing is in the afternoon. The venue is the fixed point; Takeshima and Laguna flex around it.
Weather on the coast
Typhoon season is not over. Sailing and triathlon are exactly the sports that shift when the wind or sea state is wrong, so check the official schedule the morning of your visit. If the racing is postponed, the day still works as a seaside outing, and if a warning is in force, move it. The driver will not take a group down a coast road in a storm, and neither should you want to.
