Getting There

Amami Oshima has no railway network, so the main ways to reach the venue are by bus, rental car, or taxi.

By bus Take the “Shima Bus” bound for Naze from Amami Airport. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes, and you will arrive at the “Shima Bus Head Office” bus stop. The venue is a very convenient 3-minute walk from the bus stop.

By car or rental car From Amami Airport, follow National Route 58 toward central Naze; the journey normally takes approximately 40 minutes. However, severe congestion is expected on the day of the fireworks display, as many cars head toward central Naze. In the evening especially, local residents driving home from work add to the traffic, so we recommend setting out with at least 1 extra hour to spare. Traffic restrictions will also be in effect around the venue, so check your route in advance.

Last buses and transportation after the event Since Amami Oshima has no railway, buses are the main form of public transportation. Immediately after the fireworks end, major traffic jams can develop on roads leading from Naze Port in all directions, and it may take more than 1 hour for traffic to fully clear. To make your journey home more comfortable, consider delaying your departure and enjoying the post-fireworks atmosphere at a restaurant in town, or leaving the venue a little early rather than staying until the very end.

Paid Seating and Tickets

No paid viewing areas are scheduled for the Amami Festival Fireworks Display. The fireworks can be enjoyed free of charge, but this also means the area around the main venue becomes extremely crowded. If you plan to claim a viewing spot, we recommend arriving at the venue early.

Lesser-Known Viewing Spots

For those who want to avoid the crowds at the main venue while still enjoying a beautiful view of the fireworks, here are several recommended spots.

1. Gotenhama Park (ごてんはまこうえん) One of the most popular viewing spots, with a sweeping view of Naze Bay. There are very few buildings to block the fireworks, and in typical years the park also hosts stage concerts and dance performances, with numerous food stalls lining the area. It is close to the venue and ideal for anyone who wants to fully soak up the festival atmosphere, but because it is popular, arriving early is essential. Restrooms are available in the park.

2. Daikuma Observatory (だいくまてんぼうだい) This observation spot sits on elevated ground overlooking Naze Port and the city. Its appeal lies in its beautiful sunset at dusk, followed by the chance to enjoy the city lights and fireworks together at night. Because it is some distance from the venue, the fireworks feel less powerful than they do at the main site, but you can watch them in a more relaxed setting. It is also popular for dates and photography, but there are no restrooms, so be sure to use one beforehand.

3. The Waterfront Area Around Naze Port Numerous spots around Naze Port offer clear views of the fireworks. Moving just a little away from the main venue often gives you more space, and some locations offer wide views of the entire display. Bringing a picnic sheet will make your time more comfortable.

4. Hotel Rooms with Fireworks Views Some hotels in central Naze offer rooms on the harbor side where you can watch the fireworks. These rooms are popular with families with young children and anyone wishing to avoid the crowds, as they allow you to relax in air-conditioned comfort. Reservations tend to fill up quickly on the day of the fireworks display, so booking several months in advance is recommended.

Q. Will there be food stalls? A. Yes. In typical years, numerous food stalls are set up, mainly around Gotenhama Park, adding to the festival atmosphere. Popular stalls can attract long lines, so it is best to buy your food with plenty of time before the fireworks begin.

Q. Is parking available? A. Yes. In typical years, free temporary parking areas are set up at locations such as the grounds of Izubu Elementary School (approximately 100～200 spaces). However, spaces are limited and the lots often fill up by evening, so arriving early is recommended. Paid parking is also available in the city center, including Amami City Yanigawa Parking (approximately 12 minutes on foot, approximately 48 spaces), Kumamoto Parking (approximately 15 minutes on foot, approximately 40 spaces), and Chuo Parking (approximately 18 minutes on foot, approximately 17 spaces). However, many parking lots are already full from the morning on the day of the fireworks display. Parking a little farther away and walking to the venue may make it easier to avoid traffic jams on the way home.

Q. Will there be traffic restrictions? A. Yes. Traffic restrictions are generally implemented around the venue to ensure the fireworks can be launched safely. Restrictions are in place from around 18:00 to around 20:00 (some information indicates approximately 19:00～22:00), and many roads around the Naze Commercial Port District and Gotenhama Park are closed to vehicles. Bus stops may also be temporarily relocated. If you are driving, it is important to check your route in advance so that you do not enter the restricted area during these hours.
