The cheapest way to fly in a helicopter over Tokyo is the 10-minute Tokyo First Flight: ¥83,800 per person for one seat on a shared three-seat flight, departing from Tokyo Heliport at Shin-Kiba. If you would rather have the whole aircraft to yourselves, the private charter is ¥226,300.

It is not in Nagoya. None of our helicopter flights are; they run from Tokyo, the Mt Fuji region and Yokohama. But Nagoya to Tokyo is about 1 hour 40 minutes on the Nozomi Shinkansen, and most international spectators pass through Tokyo on the way in or out. That makes the taster a realistic add-on for the days before 19 September or after the closing ceremony on 4 October.

Here is what the ten minutes actually involve, who fits in the cabin, and where the taster sits against the next flights up.

What ¥83,800 buys

  • One seat on a shared flight, 10 minutes in the air.
  • Three passenger seats per flight. The price is per seat, so two of you pay for two seats; the whole aircraft as a private charter is ¥226,300.
  • Departure and return at Tokyo Heliport, Shin-Kiba.
  • Online payment at booking, weather cancellation covered by a full refund or a free date change.

What it does not buy: a full circuit of Tokyo. Ten minutes is enough to lift off, get the view, and come back. If you want to spend real time over the city, the 15-minute Skytree daytime flight at ¥128,100 per person or the 30-minute Tokyo Panorama at ¥256,200 per person are the ones to look at.

Where you fly from: Shin-Kiba

Tokyo Heliport is at Shin-Kiba, on the bay side of Tokyo. That matters for two reasons.

First, travel time. If you arrive at Tokyo Station on the Shinkansen from Nagoya, you still have to cross to the bay side. Do not book a meeting time that assumes you step off the train and into the helicopter. Leave an honest gap.

Second, the view starts over the water. Because the heliport is on the bay, the first thing you see after lift-off is the waterfront rather than a dense inner-city district. The exact route and the landmarks in view are described on the product page and depend on air traffic and wind on the day, so treat any list of "you will see X" as indicative.

What happens in the ten minutes, and the thirty before

The time shown on the product page is the meeting time, not the take-off time. Plan on this shape:

  1. Meeting time. Arrive at the heliport, check in, present your booking.
  2. Weigh-in and briefing. Seat allocation is based on weight, and the safety briefing is mandatory.
  3. Boarding, roughly 30 minutes after the meeting time.
  4. Ten minutes airborne.
  5. Landing, photos beside the aircraft if the ground crew allow it, and you are free.

Budget about an hour at the heliport in total. It is a short flight, but it is not a five-minute stop.

Three seats, 220 kg: the weight rule in plain terms

Every helicopter product has two limits: 120 kg per seat, and a cabin total. For a 3-seat cabin the total is 220 kg.

Worked examples:

  • Two adults at 80 kg and 90 kg: 170 kg, fine, and a third seat is still open for someone up to 50 kg.
  • Three adults at 75 kg each: 225 kg, over the cabin limit by 5 kg. One person flies on a second booking, or two fly and one waits.
  • One adult at 125 kg: over the per-seat limit regardless of who else is in the cabin.

Give honest weights when you book. This is a safety calculation done by the operator, and finding out at the weigh-in that the group does not fit is the most avoidable disappointment in helicopter travel.

Taster versus the next steps up

Flight Duration Seats Per person (shared) Whole aircraft (private)
Tokyo First Flight 10 min 3 ¥83,800 ¥226,300
Tokyo Skytree Daytime 15 min 3 ¥128,100 ¥345,900
Tokyo Skytree Night 22 min 3 From ¥151,200 (¥165,200 on weekends and holidays) From ¥408,300 (¥446,100 on weekends and holidays)
Tokyo Panorama 30 min 3 ¥256,200 ¥691,800

The step from 10 to 15 minutes costs ¥44,300 more per person. The step from 10 to 22 minutes at night costs ¥67,400 more per person on a weekday. Whether that is worth it depends on whether the point is to have flown, or to have seen Tokyo from the air properly. For a first-timer who is not sure they will like it, the taster is the sensible test.

Fitting it in around the Games

Before the opening ceremony. Arrive in Tokyo, fly the taster the next morning, take the Shinkansen to Nagoya by early afternoon. Men's football starts as early as 15 September and soft tennis at Higashiyama Park on 18 September, so early arrivals have sessions waiting.

After the closing ceremony on 4 October. Shinkansen to Tokyo on 5 October, taster the same afternoon or the next morning, then onward.

Around the Asian Para Games, 18 to 24 October. Same pattern, shorter daylight.

Whatever the date, book with a spare day nearby. Autumn weather in Japan still includes typhoons, and a weather cancellation gives you a refund or a free new date, but only if your schedule has room for one.

Booking checklist

  • Date, with a buffer day either side if possible.
  • Number of passengers, maximum 3.
  • Approximate weight of each passenger.
  • Meeting time chosen from the product page; remember the flight is about 30 minutes later.
  • How you will reach Shin-Kiba from your Tokyo hotel or from Tokyo Station.

Date changes are free up to 4 days before the flight. Inside that window, contact us and we will explain what is possible on your booking.

FAQ

Is ¥83,800 per person or for the whole helicopter?

Per person: it buys one seat on a shared three-seat flight, and two people pay for two seats. If you want the whole aircraft to yourselves, book it as a private charter at ¥226,300.

Can I do this flight from Nagoya on a Games day and be back for an evening session?

Not comfortably. Even with 1 hour 40 minutes each way on the Shinkansen, plus crossing Tokyo to Shin-Kiba and about an hour at the heliport, you are looking at most of a day. Treat it as an add-on before or after the Games rather than a between-sessions trip.

What if I weigh more than 120 kg?

The per-seat limit is 120 kg and it applies to every product. There is no exception on the taster, so please check before booking.

Is ten minutes long enough to see anything?

You will lift off, see the bay side of Tokyo and the skyline from the air, and return. It is a taste, as the name says. If seeing specific landmarks matters, the 15-minute and longer flights are built for that.

What if the weather turns?

If the operator cancels for weather you get a full refund or a free date change. Independently of weather, you can move your date for free up to 4 days before the flight.
