How it runs

1Part one is a guided look around the atelier: an introduction upstairs with panels and video, then the production floor where the artisans work — around three quarters of an hour.
2Part two puts a brush in your hand. An artisan sits with you while you colour white silk for roughly 45 minutes; aprons, brushes and rollers are laid out for you.
3Framed artwork: the silk comes pre-printed with outlines — pick one of about ten designs and fill it in. At roughly 18 × 13 cm it is postcard-sized, and it leaves with you framed on the day.
4Handkerchief: a square of pure silk about 30 × 30 cm. After your session the atelier steams, washes and sews it, then sends it on — expect it about a month later.
5Obi-age and stole: choose your colour and paint a silk length of about 170 × 30 cm. It goes through the same steaming, washing and sewing before being delivered roughly a month on.

Good to know

Short stay in Japan? Only the framed piece is ready the same day. For the handkerchief or the obi-age set, confirm with us where it should be delivered before you book.
Slots hold up to 12 guests for the framed piece or the handkerchief, and up to 6 for the obi-age and stole.
Children from age 3 can paint too, at the same price as adults.
Sessions start at 10:00, 14:00 or 16:00 on weekdays only, near Takeda Station in Fushimi, and you can still book until 07:00 on the morning of your visit.
