How it runs

1. 1The visit opens upstairs, in the atelier's third-floor reference room: display panels and short films explain how a kimono goes from a drawn design to finished, dyed silk.
2. 2Downstairs on the second floor you stand beside the benches where craftsmen hand-paint outlines and blend colours by eye — this is a working studio, not a museum.
3. 3Allow about 45 minutes in total. You leave with a small souvenir from the atelier.

Good to know

• What you are watching is tegaki Kyo-yuzen, Kyoto's hand-painted kimono dyeing, a craft handed down since the Edo period.
• Guiding comes in English or French, and an interpretation device plays a multilingual audio guide for other languages.
• Tours leave at 10:00, 14:00 and 16:00, Monday to Friday. The studio shuts on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays and over the New Year break.
• Photography is allowed, but people are at work around you — keep it quiet and considerate.
• Guests aged 3–18 pay the child rate and one slot takes up to 20 people, which makes this an easy pick for families and larger groups.
• Getting there: roughly a ten-minute walk from Takeda Station (north ticket gate, east exit), served by the Karasuma subway line and the Kintetsu Kyoto Line; a taxi from the Hachijo exit of Kyoto Station takes about ten minutes.
