Wearing a kimono at Sakura Yuki is very simple — the staff handle everything. However, knowing the process in advance will help you feel at ease, prepare the right clothes, and take better photos.
Wear regular underwear + a wire-free bra (a tank top is even better). DO NOT wear a thick cotton top, as it will show through the kimono layers. Leave your hair down — Sakura Yuki will style it later. Bring: your wallet, phone, and a Japanese eSIM/SIM. NO special shoes are needed — wooden zori are provided.
Check in → the staff will ask for your body size (and measure you again if necessary). Choose a kimono from more than 20,000 styles — you can browse photos or try them on in person. Suggested colors: pastels for spring (sakura), deep red/navy for autumn, and pale yellow for summer (yukata).
Change into a juban (cotton kimono undergarment). The staff will put the main kimono on you and tie 3 layers of cords with himo (silk cords). They will tie the obi (30cm-wide sash) at the back into a bow. It may feel tight across your chest at first — this is normal and keeps the kimono from slipping.
The stylist will create a style based on your chosen photo or recommend one that suits your kimono. Popular styles include: a high updo bun (elegant), half-up with flowers (cute), and Taisho roman (retro). Add hair accessories from the DECO 放題 package if you booked it.
Walk slowly (taking small steps of about 30–40 cm) to keep your obi from loosening. When going up or down stairs, lightly hold your skirt with one hand. Do not bend too deeply. When sitting, keep your back straight and place your hands on your thighs. Do not stretch out your legs — sitting in the Japanese seiza style is the proper form.
Best angle: turn your body 45° away from the camera, with one foot in front of the other. Hold an umbrella (free Sakura Yuki) or a fan. Traditional backgrounds include red torii gates, wooden walls, and bamboo forests. A close-up of your hand holding the umbrella, with Japanese-style nails, makes a great Instagram shot.
