One hotel base for the first week, then two ryokan nights in the mountains — no packing and unpacking every day. Tokyo gets three days, and from it we fan out: the gold-leaf shrines and waterfalls of Nikko, Kamakura's Great Buddha and the coast, Yokohama's Chinatown and harbour. Then the car climbs to Hakone for Lake Ashi and Owakudani, and on to the Fuji Five Lakes for the Chureito Pagoda view before the last Tokyo night.
