Four hours at the resort, however you want to spend them: ski, snowboard, play in the snow and take photos, or sit in the lodge with a coffee. Lift passes and all rental — skis, board, clothing, boots — are not included.

Takayama old town · 90 min
Ninety minutes on foot through Sanmachi Suji — dark timber merchant houses from the Edo period, sake breweries with a cedar ball over the door, and Hida beef on a skewer for a few hundred yen.

Shirakawa-go under snow · 150 min
Two and a half hours in the gassho-zukuri village, a UNESCO site that gets some of the heaviest snow in Japan — the steep thatched roofs exist because of it. Walk the lanes, look inside a farmhouse, eat, and climb to the Shiroyama viewpoint if the path is open.

THE SKI RESORT IS CONFIRMED PER DEPARTURE DATE — it is chosen on the snow cover, and we tell you which one before you travel. TIMES AND ORDER MAY CHANGE with snow, weather, traffic and how things are running on the day; in winter the return to Tokyo in particular runs late, so do not book a same-evening onward train or flight. WHAT TO BRING: the ski day is on snow the whole time — waterproof gloves, a warm layer and a spare pair of socks matter more than anything else. Shirakawa-go clears its lanes but they turn to packed ice; shoes with grip. DRESSING FOR THE COLD — please read before you pack. This is not Tokyo cold. Daytime sits around −5°C, nights can reach −10°C, and at the top of the slopes the wind makes it feel far colder than the forecast number. Four things decide whether you enjoy the day: (1) WATERPROOF GLOVES, not wool — wool soaks through in ten minutes and stays cold all day; (2) WATERPROOF SHOES WITH GRIP — the village lanes are cleared but turn to packed ice; (3) AN INSULATING LAYER under your coat (light down or fleece) — three thin layers beat one thick coat; (4) SPARE SOCKS in your bag. Wet feet ruin the day. Add a hat that covers your ears and a few stick-on heat pads (kairo, about ¥100 each at any konbini) and you are set.
