Hakone Shrine was established in 757 by Priest Mangan atop Mount Hakone, claiming a location long revered for its spiritual significance. Successive military powers, notably Minamoto no Yoritomo and Tokugawa Ieyasu, held the shrine in high regard. The site honors Hakone Gongen, guardian deity of the Kanto region and a deity sought for protection during travel, romantic success, wish fulfillment, and averting misfortune. The Lakeside Torii gate creates an unforgettable sight when its silhouette appears alongside Mount Fuji reflected in the waters below. The Hakone Pirate Ship connects Motohakone Port to Togendai Port, offering the most distinctive way to traverse Lake Ashi while taking in surrounding views. Travelers without the pirate ship option can drive to Togendai Ropeway Station instead. The Hakone Ropeway (fee included in tour pricing) provides unobstructed vistas of Mount Fuji near Ōwakudani and on the Ōwakudani-to-Ubako segment. Between Ubako and Togendai, the line focuses on panoramas of Lake Ashi's volcanic crater. Ōwakudani sits southeast of Mount Fuji in Hakone City and marks the caldera remains left by volcanic activity roughly 4,000 years ago on Mount Fuji's northern face. It ranks among Hakone's premier attractions. Lake Yamanakako, part of the Fuji Five Lakes system, hosts Shiratorihama along its shore—a beach where swans gather in large numbers. The eight springs collectively called Oshino Hakkai originate from snowmelt filtering down through Mount Fuji's underground layers. The crystal-clear pools against the backdrop of Mount Fuji attract photographers worldwide. Japan designates Oshino Hakkai as a natural monument.
